dunk and roll question

ok so i have a cake dunking as week speak. 11:00 PM central time will be 24 hours dunking. i have everything ready, and i went to go get the perilite earlier and i came home to start everything only to realize that is was 'enriched with miracle grow'. i know this isn't good to use, but the nurserys are closed and dont open until tomorrow morning. is it safe to keep it in there until then? it would be like 35 hours total. is that safe? or should i take it out?

I hope im understanding right, you just want to keep the cakes dunking for longer, right? if so Yes. I sometimes dunk for 36 hours due to lack of motivation.
And you are rolling your cakes in Vermiculite, right?

If I recall correctly (I don't get the miracle grow stuff over here) some people have had algae growing in their FC when using miracle grow perlite.

yeah, and the miracle grow is supposed to be a wick for contams. either way, im gonna stay away and wait until tomorrow. i just hope 35-36 hours under water doesn't hurt the cake

They will be fine. Are you putting them in the refrigerator while you dunk? RR suggests this because it helps to keep contaminants away.

sure did. went to go get the real perilite today, made my shotgun (let me tell you, 200+ holes is a bitch with the power drill i had) and birthed my cake
some new questions 1 - i should fan 3-6 times a day. more being better, right? 2 - how often should i mist? 3 - do i continue to mist during pinning, and the growing of the shrooms 4 - after i dunk between flushes do i re-roll in verm?
thanks for the help!

1. Not sure off the top of my head but if you have that many holes...I wouldnt fan more then 1-2 times day
2. Mist from way above so it's mostly evaporated by the time it drifts down... this adds water vapor more than water, which is what you want.
3. No...IMO
4. Yes
I know 2 and 4 are correct

let me declare that im not an expert, ive grown for probably 1-2 years. so always get second opinions.
1- yes, as long as your humidity is up, fan as much as possible. 4 times a day seems sufficient
2- i wouldnt mist them atleast for a couple of days, remember you just dunked them in to water for the past 20-30 hours. when misting i find that it still is sufficient to mist maybe once every 2-3 days.
3- this is where people debate, myself and RR say you can continue misting through pinning, just use a fine mist and dont spray directly at the cake, spray it up in the air and allow the mist to fall on the cake resemmbling a very light rain
4- i personally do dunk after every flush. when i was doing cakes, i didnt re-roll though. you'll find that rolling does help, but the dunking is the far more important aspect. (especially if you are going to mist, the rolling is just for the vermiculite to hold extra water)
and 1 tip for good luck, dont place the cakes directly onto perlite, maybe make a small mound of vermiculite and sit them on top of that.
best of luck to you.

Yes.
Try and aim for something like this

Pic courtesy of Fahtster.
Placing cakes close to each other instead of spread apart, and giving them a top reservoir of verm is great for prolific flushing.

a lot of people just keep them sitting on the lid from the jar, thats always an easy option too.

IMO, cakes that sit directly on wet perlite have a higher chance of contamination contamination. Also, it may delay pinning and expend mycelial energy if the mycelium tries to colonize the perlite it's come in contact with.

I've wondered about putting them on round coffee filters on the perlite.

No, they will suck up water and have the same detrimental effect as if they were sitting directly on the perlite

what do you mean by a top reservoir of verm? like, piled on the top of the cake?

Dunked 2 of my pint cakes last night, going to roll in verm tonight and put em in my FC.
Do I need to fan even before pins show?

Look at the pic. It's pretty self explanatory. It's a little pile of verm on the top that you can keep nice and moist to help create a humid environment and supply a boost of water to the cake.

AsianYumYum on here used straws put about 1/4 inch into his cakes to serve as a water reservoir for his cakes with brilliant results. I myself have never tried this method
