    #7844557 - 01/07/08 05:04 PM (16 years, 25 days ago)

So yeah, First of all I would like to say hi, ive been browsing these forums for a while now and decided to join today. So I went fishing with my dad to this lake, there was cow shit EVERYWHERE so I decided to see if I could find any magic mushies. Ive been wanting to try them for about three years now but I cant get a connect. Ill appreciate it if you answer the questions I have to. Well here are some pics of the trip. I only found 3 different kinds

Ok, I was just wondering is this that white myciliam or how ever you spell it? It was under a peice of shit.

This is the first kind I found. Im pretty sure it aint magical lol, but Im not really sure. is it?

I also found these, Im have absolutely no idea what they are. They where growing in a strange environment,  Mind telling me if there magical?

Last one i found, and again is it magical?

Here are some pics of the environment, looks lke the best place to find shrooms!

Those big ones are Agaricus. Some of them are great edibles, but some of them are poisonous. On the positive side, one easy way to distinguish the poisonous Agaricus species is that they will smell bad (metallic, library paste, phenol). The bad odor becomes stronger as you cook them. If they smell bad while cooking, DO NOT EAT.

Agaricus is a difficult genus to make accurate IDs to species in. Two important features toward doing that are odor and bruising. To bruise one, cut it in half top to bottom, then scrape the inside with your knife edge hard enough to bruise the tissue (pretty hard). Color changes can be rapid or take up to an hour. Odor is usually noticed near where the stem and cap join. If you can't smell anything, try crushing the base of the stem with your fingers and sniffing there.

If it's too late (and they're one of the poisonous species), you won't die from Agaricus poisoning. You'll just have a bad night of nausea, stomach cramping, vomiting, diarrhea, and severe headache.

Happy mushrooming!

You won't find magic mushrooms growing from cow dung in California.

Be careful with those Agaricus you found. The various species can be difficult to tell apart and some are toxic. They are abundant in the Bay Area, and nearly all are Agaricus xanthodermus, a toxic species. A. xanthodermus can be identified by its yellow bruising, especially near the base of the stem, and an unpleasant chemical odor.

If you have a good sense of smell, you would have probably detected something foul as you cooked those mushrooms.

I'd recommend tossing those, as you have not identified them - a dangerous practice.

Sweet cow pic.

your best bet in your area [one i know well] are for Panaeolus subbalteatus, which i occasionaly find in lawns and which may also be found in smaller numbers in the pastureland and on hay stacks which have been left in the elements, or to hear towards the bay area. there are also the occasionaly Gymnopilus finds.

i've hunted mushrooms in the central valley for years.

orchards, parks, river floodplains, riparian systems, campuses, roadsides, etc. there aren't many places i'm not at least passively scanning for mushrooms.

BTW: those boiled agaricus look foul. at least you're eating them on tortilla. i'm a fan of flat breads.

I've lived in this area for twenty years. As has been said already, your best bet is for Panaeolus Subbalteatus. Research and learn.
There are some edibles out this time of year but you seriously need to learn how to cook them though. I don't know if the boiled mushrooms was supposed to be a joke or what, but that was pretty nasty.
And NEVER eat mushrooms that are not 100% identified.
Research and learn for yourself. Don't rely on others to tell you what is what.

Good Luck

Those look really nasty lol...I probably would NOT have eaten those regardless if they would make me sick or not. Only edibles I like are Morels. It's not a good practice to pick mushrooms when you still have not identified them. If you want some SAFE mushrooms try growing them yourself.

what are the one you eat, i have trouble to look some of your pictures are real good good scenery , you eat the agaricus i presume , all agaricus are edible unlees they smell fould as tm point out , in mexico is the only rule people use they don´t even bother if they turn yelllow or not , the oddor , once you know the bad odor the bad ones produce is pretty easy to rule out,now if you add the bruising you will understand more, many agaricus are eat, in many places, some have medicinal value i mean agaricus is one of the safes genus for me to ingest, but for sure if you don´t know how to id, is pretty risky , by the way spider can do notthing to you , and specially that spider the only one you should worry about are the black spiderwith red tail, call black widow and wolf spider but that don´t grow in your area , i guees ticks can be more of a problem

all my best vibrations.

EEEWWWW!!!!

Learn to cook mushrooms properly!!!!!  Those look slimy and mushy and groooooss.  :argh:

As for the spiders.... I have like, 4 spider bites on my right hand.  Seeing as I am right handed, and have been picking a lot of mushrooms lately, I figure I'm not noticing teh spiders.  I'm scared shitless of spiders (excluding tarantulas and other arachnids).  That's cool that you can notice the spider in the photo.  Creepy.

cure: they are actualy verry common here in the valley.

if they are not brown recluses, i can't tell the difference. the one that bit me in chico left a nasty ulcer, infection and then persistent rash i still have to this day.

cactu: the black widdows live everywhere here. i made the mistake of laying down nests a few weeks ago at a modesto park. took me 5 min to be sure i had flicked them all off of my clothing and over an hour to satisfy myself that there where none inside my clothing.

Brown recluse spiders do not occur in California.

ya
they do
this has been debated many times. on this site even
but trust me they do

i was watching somthing on nat geo a few nights ago about venomous things and the brown reclous 's range was said not to go east of arizna

not true at all. i have seen people who have been bitten by them in my home town and i have seen them in my toy chest
they are here to stay

I'm just saying that with a little bit of culinary experimentation, they could taste a hell of a lot better.

Next time try putting some butter and/or olive oil in a pan, saute some onion and/or garlic, and throw the chopped mushrooms into the pan and saute (till cooked THOROUGHLY).  Add a little salt and pepper, and you'll have us drooling rather than gagging.

yzz and just let them  chill in the pan, dont move them around or flop em around, a majority of fungus especially meaty individual's like big agaric's like you have there, are going to give off alot of water during the process of cooking them, that's probebly why you have a soupy mixture as your final product, get a pan really hot, add your butter or oil and plop your shrooms in there and let em sear, it'll caramelize and itll be delicious, without becoming a soupy mess.

Those mushrooms actually look quite tasty cooked that way. And being that they were simply boiled, you taste their true flavor.

When I cook mushrooms, I usually chop them up, then put them in a skillet with margarine and fry them until slightly crispy. Then I put them in a bowl and eat them with a toothpick.

Or all the flavour is leeched out of the mushroom and into the water they're boiled in. Bad idea unless you're making soup.

Yes, i have.  They are slimy, limp, mushy and wet.  I'm not talking shit, just making observations.
NOTE -  I explained how to cook them better, i'm not just trying to bring him down, i'm trying to suggest a better way to enjoy them.
I worked as a sous chef for a while, and i'm picky, so sorry if it came off the wrong way.

You might be able to find Panaeolus subbalteatus there during warmer weather, but you likely won't find any active mushrooms there now.

actualy the cloud cover are the reasons the lows are as warm as they are. that does look like decent grounds for hunting Pan. subbalteatus, though if you find them, it won't likely be in any decent numbers. if you can find some place where stable wastes are dumped, hay stacks which have been left in the weather over the year or expansive lawns such as parks, golf courses, housing developments [of which we have plenty], etc you will likely have better luck. on the other hand, the scenery in the hills is certainly nicer. good luck

for those others of you who might not be familiar with this area, it is extremely dry most of the year.

Wow a fellow modesto hunter. Nice pics. we hit a cow like that out on Claribel a few years back... it was allllll kinds of bad. It kinda popped. Pretty much nill when it comes to actives- but so many non-actives/edibles in the area and serve some pretty nice viewing. Those agaricus are so very abundant here. Not to hard to clone into your backyard either.

I know what lake those pics are of, and those cows are all over that place. Some of the cows walk right up to the lake and drink.
