salvia hispanica L grain in substrate???? * 1
    #7843185 - 01/07/08 11:27 AM (16 years, 10 months ago)

Besides Quinoa I also purchased Salba, or Salvia hispanica grain to add to a few of my next substrate batches.
The package claims it to be the most powerful whole food, containing high omega 3, fibre, antioxidants and protein.

Has anybody tried this before? answers please

I will also be using hemp protein that is high in tryptophan, but i was able to find reports of this being done before, however i can not find ANY info on growing from salvia grains..

Well i have prepared the jars, unfortunately i only had 3 left and no liquid cultures, just spore syringes. so it will be a while until i can post my findings. i did one jar with salvia grains and brf, the other with quinoa, brf and hemp protein. the last is plain quinoa, so nothing new there....

has ANYBODY tested salba??!?!

I've never heard of it being used. It will be interesting to hear your results.

If I had to guess I would think that it probably wouldn't be the best substrate. It's high in oil and fatty acids, which probably aren't the best for fungi.

Yeah, maybe in small amounts (1-2%) it would work in a substrate, but it would be too much as its own sub.

Update: Out of my 3 test jars; The salvia hispanica grain is showing the fastest signs of growth over Quinoa+BRF and Hemp protein+BRF.

Not enough mycellium growth clear enough visible on the quality camera I have. I will update again once I have them closer to full collonization. Salvia hispanica is quite high in tryptophans, don't know if thats significant or not, but it does seem to be slightly ahead of the others in growth.

EDIT:

I took some pictures that turned out visible.

Salvia hispanica+BRF

Quinoa+BRF

Hemp protein+BRF

i didnt get any pictures of the first flushes, but i will take pictures of the second ones.

the salvia grain cake produced the most pins(also the most aborts) but some of the largest mushrooms, and all of them had completely white gills, i didnt even bother trying to take prints from them. this didnt happen with any of my other cakes.

white gills you say? you should have tried to take spore print anyways. it would have been interesting to see if it makes them sterile or not when you use salvia grain.
