Contams don't have to be visible. "Slime" isn't a good aign though!
The most safe way, to check if something's rotten is the smell. If it doesn't smell like mushrooms or grain, toss it!

Normally, bacteria will look almost like grease around individual kernels. Wet is fine, but a greasy or slime look is bad. As said, take a whiff through the filter. If it's rotten, you'll know. It's the same type of bacteria that make your kitchen trash stink when you forget to carry it out.
