Mold/saving my casing.
    #4751611 - 10/03/05 09:12 PM (19 years, 3 months ago)

last night I found a small quarter sized spot of green mold growing on som of my white myc. I sterilzed a spoon w/ alcohol and removed the small spot of mold. I then made a post of what I could do if anything to save the casing. I got a reply saying that Hippi Chick has used a h2o and bleach solution to kill any mold spores and then put table salt in the wound of the casing where the mold was removed. I need to know what the bleach to water ratio is. I really want to save this casing, it's been long coming. 22 hours later there isn't any mold growing, so far.

Just followed those instructions, when I panicked and found green mold on my casing.....Should I just leave it be, and check frequently?

If the contamination is small, u might be able to slow it down enough to get 1 flush out of your susbtrate. After its best to be disposed of.

I would recomend to start over, if u must try and get a flush, isolate it from your other grows into its own fruiting chamber, and follow the above instructions.

The mould will probably start growing back, The problem is what u are seeing is not nessesarily all of it, it could be deep within your susbtrate.

Can't be saved really. Do a search, it never works long term.

Sometimes you can cut out the section, if it's isolated, trouble is, what you see it only the tip of the iceberg.

I see, if I did happen to get a normal looking flush, and ate the mushrooms...

Ahhh, its just that I spent 6 weeks on the entire process.....so frustrating.

Let me ask something else, I cased a jar with peat/verm 50/50 about 3 days ago, is it too late to add Oyster Shell and balance out the PH level to up its chances against mold?

Please let me know-

Bleach won't kill mold. Ditto for peroxide, other than cobweb. If a substrate is actively flushing, you can make it to harvest OK by applying a salt paste over the spot. Cover the green spores and about an inch all the way around them with a wet, sticky salt paste. Don't try to cut any part of it out, or you'll release billions of spores. The salt paste will kill the spores and slow down the infection below.

However, if it isn't fruiting yet, it probably won't and the mold is sure to come back. If that's the case, toss it.

Wow, toss it hunh.....how incredibly frustrating.

I currently have my 2nd casing in the incubator still, is there anything I can do to help prevent mold from owning me again this time? Is there anything at all? IF so, what measurements of stuff should I put, etc.

Yes. Get it out of the incubator and colonize at room temperature.

I think RR is saying that you don't need an incubator to colonize substrate. I agree. Since I have tossed out my incubator, I have had 0 contams. If the room is comfy enough for you, then the substrate will colonize.

I just moved it in the fruiting chamber(the one I bombed with LYSOL before putting the tray in) since then, should I take it out of the fruiting chamber and put it on my coffee table?

There are about 10 half-dollar spots of mycelium scattered about.

I have always had better results with "incubating" everything at room temp
