RR- Question about Cultivating Coriolus
    #7842243 - 01/07/08 03:23 AM (16 years, 26 days ago)

Hey RR, I didnt know if you could give me any information on cultivating Coriolus. Ive been reading a lot of interesting information that you have posted, mainly on cordyceps, but im interested in Coriolus and didnt know if you knew anything about this species. Any info you have to share would be greatly appreciated.

One of these days, I'll clone a turkey tail and see how it does. It grows wild in the PNW, so we have all we could ever use.

Two years ago, Mrs Rabbit went through Chemo for cancer, taking medicinal mushroom extracts, boiling turkey tail and reishi into teas every day, and eating shiitake every day. She completed chemo with 80% of her hair, while everyone else loses it all. Her doctor was amazed, but we're convinced it was the mushrooms. What properties, and which mushrooms did the most good, we have no idea, but suspect it was the cocktail of all of them.

I do know the commercial growers of Coriolus grow and harvest the mycelium for the active ingredients, not the fruit bodies.

What differences, if any, would be present in the mycelia and primordia but not in a fruiting body?

I am just interested in cultivating an array of medicinal mushrooms for some independent research and personal medicinal use. It at least seems like it would be relatively easy to cultivate especially since it grows in the PNW.

I haven't read much on extracting polysaccharides from mycelium but I'm sure it wouldn't be impossible, I am fortunate to have access to my companies laboratory which makes experimentation a lot easier for me.

I think mostly they dry the mycelium itself and then grind into powder to stuff capsules. With medicinal mushrooms, the consensus seems to be that the benefits are equally in the mycelium and fruit body, so there's no real need to grow fruits. If you wanted fruits, you'd probably want to grow oysters or shiitake, etc., on the substrate blocks first, and then re-sterilize the spent substrate and inoculate with the turkey tail culture. I usually only see turkey tails on badly decomposed wood, so I'm assuming it's a secondary decomposer.

that seems to be consistant with the limited research I did last night as well. That sounds like the best approach as well, Im hoping to collect several Coriolus to clone when I make a hunting trip to Oregon here in April/May.
