ID Request - Check out this crazy splitting!

I found some clumps of what I am guessing is some sort of Agaricus. It almost matched the description I have for Agaricus arvensis in the Falcon Guide to NA Mushrooms but it was growing under an oak tree and not in a meadow of field and the pics in the book made them look too big and chunky. Maybe abruptibulbus?
Also I just thought the way they were split so wildly made the caps look like popcorn and thought it would be fun to show off.

* Habitat On the side of a road near Los Gatos at the eastern foot of the Santa Cruz mountains. These mushrooms came from a tight cluster of 6 or
7 growing below some California oak. Although the mushrooms are medium size and the stipe is long they were mostly below the ground
with only the tops of the cap sticking out. * Characteristics of the gills The gills are unattached. young gills started buff color and now the color is grey to a slight dusty pink around the edges which has become
more apparent as the cap has dried while taking the spore print. * Characteristics of the stem Stipes range from 5 to 8 cm long and 1.5 to 2 cm wide. Fibrous, not chalky. Solid. The color was a tan, light brown. I didn't notice any
bruising. There is an annulus on the stipe that is thick and white. In one of the photos you can just make out what might have been a
yellow ring on the bottom inside edge of the annulus. * Characteristics of the cap The caps are up to 10 cm across. The caps start domed and move to convex as they spread out and crack. The cap becomes scaly as it
matures. The caps maturing before the recent rains started are badly split open (see pic 2) and as more moisture was available it
seemed they grew without splitting so badly. * Spore print color The spore print black and dark grey with the slightest tinge of red or purple. I don't know if you can see it in the photo. * Color that the mushroom bruises No bruising I noticed. * Scent of the mushroom Nothing distinctive in the smell.

Looks a bit like Agrocybe praecox. Are you sure there is a ring on the stem? It looks like it's just kind of split. The clumping habit would also suggest Agrocybe over Agaricus. I don't know though, I'm pretty rusty at the identification game. Also it looks awfully fleshy for Agrocybe. Hmm.

Simple test to rule out either Agrocybe or Agaricus:
Pick the mushroom, then drop kick it. If it explodes into a billion little pieces, it is not Agrocybe. If either the stem or cap stays whole after kicking it, and falling to the ground, it is not Agaricus.

Another quick way (at this point) is to note the splitting of the cap surface in the second photo. That type of splitting indicates a cellular cuticle, and Agaricus has a filametary cuticle. So the second photo shows us that it's not an Agaricus.
Of course, that lacks the drama of drop kicking a mushroom. Personally, I prefer drop kicking Russulas.
Happy mushrooming!

Interesting! Thanks for the tip, later today I am planning on going to check the clumps again so i'll definitly do a drop kick test, ha ha.
Can I ask a dumb question, Toxicman? What does the cuticle refer to? Is it the top layer of the pileus?

Yeah, I haven't forgotten how you told me they "POP" when you kick them..... However, i usually leave those on the ground and kick, cause so often they are infested with bugs, and I don't feel like sinking my fingers into a maggot infested Russula.

Maggots don't have the redeeming quality of cuteness, that slugs have.

there used to be a guy here who thought if a mushroom split like yours than it should be classified as a different species

i dropped back by the little clump of Agrocybe (?) today and took a few more pictures. Unfortunately I had just picked a couple Blewits and was excited since it is my first edible find I felt sure of enough to consider eating. So the long and the short is I forgot to do the drop kick test.
Someone else had been by and taken a look, they had pulled up part of the clump and left it sitting there:

Here is a close up look at the biggest in the pic above. You can see where the cap will open and leave the annulus.

Here is the clump, more and more are popping up around the original (old ones) I originally found last week.

Here is an old one with the annulus,

Does it still look like Agrocybe praecox?

Not at all....
That habitat shot looks a LOT like Agaricus, but I'm trying to recall if under any circumstances I have ever seen any species from that genus split like in your photos... I know the pileus cuticle may be different, but those certainly don't look like any Agrocybe I've ever seen. They look a lot like Chlorophyllum, but the spore colour is wrong...

Agreed, not Agrocybe. I thought some type of Lepiota too. Are you sure these are the same mushrooms as in the original post thirdwire? Weird. Also, I don't often see Agaricus clump like that. Without the split that last pic looks very Agaricus-like.

Absolutely, definitely, 100% sure these are the same mushrooms. Out of curiosity I have been checking this spot every day or every other day to see what happens. Each of the mushrooms in the initial post came from around the split ones in the group photo I posted last night.
