Another Reason To Distrust Your Senses
    #7841889 - 01/06/08 11:15 PM (16 years, 26 days ago)

The camels are the little white things. The black things are shadows. The human brain is very easy to fool.

4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.

The little white things are clumps of pixels emitting light on my monitor and are NOT camels.

I don't see how your able to present this photo as a reason to distrust our senses...

Yes, it is an incredible shot, but it takes very little to realize what your looking at initially is a shadow, not the camels themselves. Especially the way they stretch and overlap each other.

I've seen better optical illusions, though not very many photos quite like this.

^That is a good optical illusion.

they may resemble camels. they don't look like actual camels. they look like shadows of camels, which differ from actual camels in subtle but vastly important ways. it would take an a man of intergalactic stupidity to mistake the black silhouette of a camel for the actual beast and a similarly incompetent man to think a camel wasn't around upon seeing said shadow

I'll admit, when I first looked at it, I just thought it was a painting of a bunch of camel sillouhets on a tan marbley backround.

Still though, distrust your senses anyway. It's what the cool kids are doing, and it's as likely to lead to enlightenment or the release of earthly bondage or nirvana or getting laid at parties as anything.

I have developed a liking for my senses over the years, I'd be lost without them.

Well, I could say the same for women. I like them a lot, but I'll be damned if I trust them.

Distrusting isn't the same as renouncing. Questioning whether things really are the way they seem by your subjective standard isn't the same as rubbing your face on a stove eye or licking a cobra. That's not to say that the stove eye won't really turn out to be the feet of Vishnu and the cobra won't really turn out to be a giant, delicious popsicle, but that kind of thing usually only works out for crazy mystics, and usually only in epic poems.

The picture could serve as a semi-interesting test of different perceptual modes.
Some people upon seeing it recognize the camel form from the shadow and instantly decree they are looking at camels, and then realize its the projected shadows, whereas others of course recognizing the camel shape, do not respond with camel as long as some sort of intuition tells them there is something "peculiar" about what they are observing.
Its a response test for perceptual faith

when your tripping on drugs the myriads of complex visuals and symbolic forms permeating your consciousness can be understood in the same manner, how quickly is one to make a judgement, and how much impact does a symbolic attachment determine the sequential psychological reaction to follow.

Well, that's too bad for you eh? It's an unpleasant existence to be suspicious all the time, especially of the gender you are sexually attracted to. Although I suppose it's an unpleasant existence to be fully trusting by default and thus suprised when some people turn out to be less than awesome. Better to have no expectations, either of the motives of others or the absolute truth of one's perception. That way you can take more time to accurately evaluate experiences.
