Not so much. Only a seasoned listener with good hardware is likely to notice a difference. I still download flac, it makes me feel special.

Well, I suppose I'm not certain I notice a difference. I've got a 5.1 setup with a 35Hz - 20kHz frequency response... which as far as I know is pretty good unless I wanted to spend twice as much or more for that extra 5 or 10 units on either side (which would be bloody nice of course, but I'm not made of money).

It is, really. I have no shame, ask my friends.

I would need 5 more harddrives to hold all the VBR bitrate MP3s that I have if I were to switch to FLAC.
I have some FLAC files, mainly classical music. Because classical music = snobbery.

hard drive space is getting cheaper and cheaper every day. i believe that, someday, hdd space really wont be an issue. the question is, will you still have a library of compressed files when compression isnt needed?
flacs are called 'lossless' for a reason... all the information on the cd is still there. nothing was sacrificed for storability. in recent months, i have started moving my music catalog (which is sizable) to flac format. i figure it is easier to do it now with 500GB than it will be in a few years when i count my collection in multi-terabytes.
i have built some of the best loudspeakers and worked for some of the best loudspeaker manufacturers in the world. if you think there isnt a difference, then you have never heard good loudspeakers. sure, maybe you cant hear the difference on your creative labs, lansing or logitech speakers, but someday you may be prosperous enough in life to get into audiophile level listening gear.
fuck, i'm just rambling now. if you dont want lossless formats, then dont download them, but there is a difference... it's called lossless for a reason.

I was going to have a terabyte of space, but for some dumbass reason I decided I'd rather save 30 bucks and get 500gb.
I'm still kicking myself for that honestly. A terabyte is plenty roomy and will last me as long as the hard drives do. Plus, it's good for some nerd points.
My music collection isn't huge, so I can afford the extra space.

I don't know about him, but assume I could spend about $350.00. Would I be low-balling it or is that enough to get speakers to benefit listening to lossless files?

low end quality?
I don't have a stellar soundcard or anything, but I need to get new speakers. Logitechs and similar are like 79 to 100...150 wouldn't be terrible. Is it really worth the extra money? How much are we speaking here?

The only flac files i get are bootlegs from live shows. Mostly tool shows. I've got about 75 shows and im going to try to fill up my 60 gig ipod with them so i can get a 160 gig. but unfortunately i have to convert the flacs to mp3 to get em on the device. But flac is good quality stuff.

look into a good 2.1 system. you'll find that you can get descent monitors in a 2.1 configuration. i'll see what i can dig up a little later.

I got my logitech setup for around $80, they were offering a rebate on a $130 system.
My only complaint is they paid more attention to making the bass loud than they did to making it complement the system, so even with the sub at minimum volume I feel like a wigger trying to show off his car stereo.

Compression circuitry helps eliminate distortion from your music, even at high volumes

IMO those are crap, if you want a good system don't look for loudspeakers, look for studio monitors. 150€ monitors will sound infinitely better than 450€ loudspeakers.

bose are notoriously bad speakers in the speaker community. how are they so successful? name another speaker company you see infomercials for.
