Why are my mushrooms taking ages and ages to mature?
    #7838395 - 01/06/08 07:44 AM (16 years, 26 days ago)

Compared with all other people around me, I can only conclude my pin growth is abnormally slow. I see people's fruits develop from pin to full sized fruit in often less than 7 days.
And then those statements like 'the mushrooms double in size every day', ..I just don't friggin get it.

I'm on day 7 now since my pins showed up, and the largest pin is not even hitting the half inch mark.

Allow me to state the facts:

-I dunked and rolled the cakes
-I use a tub with drilled in holes, clay pellets on the bottom (I sought weeks and weeks to find perlite, and believe me when I say its not available here).
-I fan 10 times a day
-I've got a fogger turning on for 5 mins every 2 hours (the pellets alone don't seem to keep the RH up with all the fanning). RH = upper 90's
-I don't see any contaminations

The only parameter in which I seem to differ from most other guys here, is the low nighttime temp of 58 (day=68). I know that RR has stated that this is no problem, but could it be the cause of this tiring slow process?

I have done a search an looked at similar threads but the only thing they keep on saying is; more FAE and check your RH.
10 times of fanning and 95RH in my case, whats wrong with that?

Agree, it does look like PE. I could never grow those lol or get myself to eat them. Who's the genius who decided to name them penis envy lol ? Nibin had a good link their but you did say you had 90=95 percent humidity so I don't see that being the problem. Id say your low temperature is your problem, 58 is way to cold for optimal growth 68 would be closer but still not the 70-75 that is recommended.

It also talks about correct water levels of the substrate. With such a good pinset the substrate will dry out quickly.

Try sitting the cake in a saucer of water for 12 hours adding water as it gets "sucked" up.

Are the veils broken already? Are the caps kinda dark? Are they aborted? I cant tell but the caps look like they are open a bit... How long have they been open like that?

Ah a lot of replies, great!

Well first of all they are Golden Teachers, or well they should be.
Sadly enough no Smartshops here in belgium, have to go to holland for that.
You might be right there Nibin, that cake does feel rather dry and actually I started spraying it this morning, but I'll definitely try putting it in a saucer with water.

The caps are indeed open Implee, that happened 2 days ago. I didn't think about that actually, but isn't that way too early?
Didn't have any aborts yet, just 3 more of those pin clusters as the one on the pic..

The only reason for the slow grow seems to be the temps, since every other parameters are fine.
It's a fact that these mushrooms grow A LOT slower when the temps are very cool.

You should raise the temps to about 73 degress and you should notice changes in the speed of the maturing process.

I doubt that this flush will get any better, since you allready said, the caps already opened...

Once again: Raise the temps during the second flush and you'll be fine

If the caps have opened they won't grow much more. I think your substrate didn't have enough water for the shrooms to grow so they have stayed that small.

Better luck next flush.

Aah too bad.

Should I pick off all pins now and dunk, or keep those tiny little pins that haven't opened?

That link to Agar's post was quite interesting BTW, thanks..

I'd say, pick them and restart after dunk and roll.

The cold temperatures probably added to the problems. You said daytime temperatures are 58, then said, (day=68). There's a big difference between 58F and 68F. They'll fruit outdoors in 58F weather just fine, but that's too cold to get good performance in a terrarium. 68F will do better, and 75 is better yet, but that isn't the reason for the tiny fruits.

Provided other parameters are correct, moisture content of the substrate, and the food value of the substrate determine fruit size. IF your humidity was too low, the caps would be cracking(scaling), which they're not. What are your cakes made of? Did you change the recipe at all, or use white rice instead of brown? Those look like some cubes I grew once on sawdust/woodchips, which is not an appropriate substrate.

Whoops sry that was a mistake, I meant night temperature = 58

I used BRF & verm, and followed your video's for the preparation of the substrate, so I didn't change the recipe..

Cool. In that case, give a 24 hour dunk, and then increase the temperatures to above 70F and I'll bet next flush will be much better, provided you didn't end up with a bunk strain.
