Vermont is a bit more progressive than most places in the US.

His first paragraph points out a very valid point: illegalized substances make no money for the government, as opposed to tobacco, gambling, and alcohol. So instead of turning that around and making it profitable, they continue to pour loads and loads of money into fighting it, making it seem "evil".

I do not think they will make much off the taxing of pot however. I would just grow my own. Maybe if I was out then I would go to the store and get some. They would seem to gain alot from reduced correction costs though.

You're kidding yourself then. Legalized marijuana would bring in millions or billions of dollars, not to mention the savings from not having to enforce the former law.

I agree with the guy who posted this thread. I spent 5 years, 2 months, and 23 days incarcerated in prison. Not the local jail, but prison. I met many, many, many people in there for nothing but drug crimes. The ones convicted of marijuana-related crimes (only marijuana-related) were very decent guys and in my opinion didn't deserve to be there except for the fact that they did indeed break the law. Men ranging from 18 to 70 were given as much as 20 years. I read their court transcripts and it's obvious that they were hammered with unnecessary sentences. One guy in particular (65 years old) was busted with 6 lbs of marijuana. 15 years was his sentence. Not eligible for parole for 3 years. This man was one of the nicest people I'd met in the prison system or the "streets". By meeting others that knew him prior to his incarceration confirmed what I already suspected, this guy wasn't the fuckin devil by any means. Just your everyday guy. Living in a house in the country, not causing any problems, not fleecing people on sacs, not a roaddog convict. Just a man that lived his life the way he wanted to. Now, the only problem he's causing is the cost of tens of thousands of dollars a year for being housed with robbers and rapists. The law is what made him a criminal and the law is what's making him a "problem". I agree that marijuana should be de-criminalized. It's time to take a look at what's really goin on with todays prison system. If you're not a problem to others before you're convicted of a crime, then the legal system shouldn't make you a problem to the states budgeting crisis. This is 2008, not the fuckin 1940's. Some things that used to be considered taboo aren't at all taboo in todays society.

Its perfectly legal for one to brew their own beer, cheap easy and fast. I'd reckon though that only a fraction of a percent of all alcohol consumed in America is home-brewed. Many people would grow their own if it was legalized completely, but a billion times more pot would be sold bulk at convenience stores, or at speciality shops for the good stuff (like a store stocking fine wines and microbrews). Full legalization though not only means money to be made off the bud, but the whole plant. I know hemp is very different than smoked cannabis, but if the later was legalized, the former would be with it. I'm sure some industries--like lumber/paper--wouldn't be too happy though, and many jobs could be lost. Even more I think could be gained, especially if Cannabis could allow us to decrease or eliminate dependence on various foreign products (including foreign cannabis).
I dont think the feds are going to let Vermont have their fun/freedom though...look how bad med pot gets fucked with in Cali--imagine if a state fully legalizes it!

I'm a 23 year resident of Vermont this is the best thing my state has ever proposed. in the life time i have lived here i have seen lots of change and almost none for the good. the county i live in is Bennington county in the last 10 year we have became the highest county in Vermont with resident's incarcerated 65 percent in Vermont jails are Bennington resident's we are # 1 in the state for the most homeless we have the most registered sex offenders per capa in the COUNTRY!!! I personal have lost around 10 friends do to heroin overdose death's and all most my brother . the state only has two methadone clinics in the state and fight not to allow any more its there way to Dennie that we have a heroin epidemic on our hands .violence has sky rocketed because drugs go for triple the price than any were else in the country by Decriminalize Marijuana they will cut the court system & correction's system by 20 percent there by allowing police district attorney's and judges the room needed to deal with more imminent issues drugs like heroin coke etc and opening the opportunity for jobs in cultivation of Marijuana & hemp also cafe's witch will help very much in the poverty of our state we also will be able to produce a safer form of BIOS fuel than that of the fuel produced from corn and all that being taxed will give the state the money needed to repave our roads fund the learning of our student higher pay to our teachers incarceration to sexual deviants , dealer of more serious drugs, murderers, less emissions green house gas and the end of oppression that the government has placed on Marijuana and the people that enjoy it
