Filler to create air pockets in PF Tek?

Okay, So I haven't tried growing in over 3 years now, but I finally decided to take a dip back into it again, starting back out with the PF-Tek, a PMP and a TiT incubator.
I ran around town and picked up all the needed supplies, got everything set up, but all I can find is fine grain vermiculite... and I'm guessing coarse grain will not be stocked anywhere till spring finally comes. I went ahead and made up a batch, but I'm not getting any kind of colonization what-so ever.
I'm thinking this is due to the fine grain vermiculite causing way to dense of a substrate... does anyone know of something I can use to make this less dense in any way? or should I just scrap it and go with birdseed for now as it is easy to find in the winter months. I'm just worried about casings in the PMP, that doesn't really seem like the most effective use of my space.

I've used fine grain verm before. I just kept the mix airy by fluffing it up with a fork...seemed to work fine for me.

fine grain is all i use.. mainly cuz it's all i can find..
maybe your spores are toast?
how long have you waited?
i've seen it take up to a week or as little as 2 days to show signs of germination/mycelium growth.

Oh, I waited more then long enough... after a couple weeks I just kinda gave up on it at the time and didn't bother messing with it for over a month. No signs of any kind of growth, no mycellium, no cobweb, no mold, nothing... I'll give it another shot being careful to add some air, and if that doesn't work I'll do a LC on the spores.

As you are using fine grade verm, (and if it is really really fine, say no pieces bigger than a grain of rice), be extra careful when spooning the stuff in, making sure it stays fluffy and light, and make the jars a tad on the dry side.
