Accounting Software

I want to download or even consider purchasing some accounting software. I do have excel however I am currently enrolled to begin class at Arizona State University and my major is going to be accounting and finance.
When Ive been looking into jobs, a lot of companies down here use QuickBooks. But I wanted something I could use for my own personal use and to help me gain some familiarity with accounting software to help give me an advantage when I start school.

I use Quicken, which is from the same company as Quickbooks. (Intuit) It's an excellent program, far easier and more versatile than MS Money. You can download a trial version to see if you want it, and then buy it in the store or download the full version from their website.

I use Gnucash, which has the advantage of being free, and running on windows and linux.
Now if only I could install it on my new macbook without resorting to black magic, it would be ideal.

QuickBooks is an excellent program that I've been using for a few years. So many features I'm still learning to use it all.

I looked at it very breifly after installing it this morning and it seems like they have some pretty awesome tutorials including ones with mock-businesses.
Im just using it to help me get a leg up when I start school here in the fall.

I'm also considering dowloading QuickBooks. I have so many different expenses now I really need to get it all on paper. It's getting increasingly hard to keep track of what I need to pay, and when. Will it allow to literally track all my expenses, and possibly even get me on a productive budget?

For personal finances, Quickbooks is overkill. Quicken will allow you to set up a budget, monitor your spending in your budgetary categories, download transactions from your bank's website, etc... It also costs much less.
Just so you know where I'm coming from: I am a professional bookkeeper, a Certified Quickbooks Pro Advisor & an Intuit Affiliate. I've worked with these programs for more than 10 years, so I know what I'm talking about.

Sweet. I've really been horrible with me spending habits, and I could never see myself using accounting software but it's really time to get my shit together. Thanks for the tip.

Quicken is very user-friendly. I do custom set-up and user training as part of my business, and even folks who are not very tech-savvy will master the basics quickly. The budget feature is terrific, as are the planning features. If you set up your paychecks, you can even use Quicken for tax planning!

This program is confusing the SHIT out of me. I've managed to enter my paycheck info minus the Tax withholdings and 401(k) I can't for the life of me figure that out. It's a percentage, obviously, so I can't give it an exact value... I managed to get my credit card accounts except my best buy card which I have to manually download the statement.
I'm also having trouble entering something as simple as my phone bill. Do I put it under my paycheck post-tax deductions or do I make it as a transaction?
I'm very frustrated right now, is there a better tutorial out there than quicken's own? I really want to do this but not if I can't be accurate with it, it defeats the purpose.

OK, on the paycheck set up, you don't need to be 100% accurate. If it is a percentage of your gross pay, then just enter the last amount you had withheld. When the paycheck entry comes up in your register (on or near payday), you can edit the amounts to match your paystub. The paycheck set up is just a short cut so that you don't have to enter the splits from scratch each pay period.
As to your phone bill, unless it is being debited from your paycheck, the transactions would not be associated in any way. If you have it set up to auto-debit from your checking account, you can either set it up as a Scheduled Transaction, and estimate the amount it will be each month (edit later for accuracy), or download it from your bank when the transaction goes through.
PM me if you have more questions, I'll answer them in my idle moments. Here's a link which may be helpful:

I think you'd be fine with QB Pro, but here's an easy product comparison chart so that you can determine if it will fit your invidual requirements:

I think turbotax has free online software for people who make under 30k.
