Mycelia like crazy...then...nothing

Hello All!
I've exausted all Internet resources and can't find an answer.
I'm cultivating P. mexicana in a commercially-prepared mycobag with special sclerotia substrate. It visibly started growing within 5 days of inoculation. After a week of slow growth, I hand-kneaded the bags. This spread the mycelia around, and growth really took off. The mycelia were totally covering the inside of the bag, and I kneaded it throughly one more time to expedite total colonization...then...nothing.
It's been a slightly watery goo for two weeks with no signs of growth. What happened? Could low-temperature shock have killed it off (50 degrees for a couple of days)? Surely there was at least one spore per bag (I have four bags) that would be left to do the deed?
Thanks for your help,
General Tzo

I don't think the few days of cold would have ruined your grow. You can put jars in a fridge to stunt growth on purpose. So assuming you warmed them back up to 80-85 degrees I would say that something else is wrong with it. Is it getting enough Gas Exchange ? Where did you get the bags ?

Hey DontPlay:
The bags were from The Spore Works. What's FAE?

Sorry...should have read the glossary for FAE
So, to answer the question: I don't know for sure if it's getting enough FAE, but I think so.

I would imagine their bags are good but I have never bought preordered substrates nor have I ever used bags at all..Wait to see if someone more experienced with it will comment.

Don't Play, he is still colonizing, not fruiting, he doesn't want FAE only gas exchange.
To the OP. WHat was in the Bags? Grain? Also, what with and how did you inoculate? What is your setup for incubation? How are the bags stored? Describe watery mush.
We need some more info and maybe pics of the bags for an accurate response. If not we are shooting in the dark

Bacteria. You have to follow very strict sterile procedure when inoculating. Wipe the port on the bag with alcohol, and flame sterilize the syringe needle. Work in a glovebox. Colonize at room temperature, as higher temps stimulate thermophilic molds and bacteria, especially in larger substrates. RR

Nibin,
I bought the sclerotia-producing oyster kit here http://sporeworks.com/store/product.php?printable=Y&productid=16240
It doesn't say what the contents of the bags are...just that it's for a sclerotia-forming mushroom. It was colonizing pretty rapidly for a few weeks then it stopped. 4 bags with 2.5 cc of spores/water from syringe. Incubation set-up is embarrasing, but it did have a relatively constant good temperature in a large cardboard box. It was the best I could do for now. Slightly watery substrate...just a little more humid than when I received them.
RogerRabbit, the only sterile procedure I followed was swabbing with alcohol the self-healing ports before inoculation.
Thanks for your help!

You didn't flame the needle?

I think RR just helped him find his problem. I think we mostly assume ppl followed the simplest of procedures but we shouldn't take it for granted I guess.

Of course, in retrospect, flaming the needle seems perfectly obvious. In fact, in my inoculation procedures, I never read anything about sterilizing the needle. That seemed weird since I had to sterilize the outside of the bag. So, this does seem to be a place where contamination could have happened.
I guess not all inoculation tutorials are created equal. Next time, I'll throughly review the Shroomery procedures and use everything I've learned here.
Thank you all.

It is very possible you introduced contamination in that way. Alcohol will only clean the outside of the needle, you need to kill the stuff inside it too.

Would it actually take 6-8 weeks for a bacterial infection to develop?
