I am going to be able to get a laptop soon and I was wondering which one would be best for around 1000.00
I want a built in cam and a decent sound system.I am attending school also.I need one that will not be so obsolete in the next 3-5 years.I am just not sure which ones would be best for me.
I do like to watch videos and make cd's on my comp.Does anyone have any suggestions as to which computer is the best one for around a grand right now? I found this one,
<HP 17" Pavillion dv9627 cl laptop PC w/AMD Turion 64x2 Dual Core Processor TL-58>
Is anyone familiar with this one? Any other suggestions?
Thanks people!

after you buy it shortly after it will become obsolete and then you will see yours on ebay for 150 or something and then I will lol.

I had to drag this up. My comp is still 350.00 in some places and you are right, it is sold for about 150.00. LOL! I paid 1200.00 with a 2 year warranty too. It is still running great though and I am writing on it now.

This laptop looks ok for 3200 bucks http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834158342 but I have had better
If I had your budget of 1000 (let me guess TAX returns) I would try to get a tablet and a laptop. IMO in 5-10 years laptops will be obsolete and tablets will rule.
I just got a 7 inch evo 4g view tablet wifi 32 gb for 300 bucks and I really like it.

How many blowjobs does that come with? Laptops haven't cost 3200 since the 90s.
btw, in 5-10 years, tablets will already be obsolete...

Look at Asus and Lenovo brand laptops. They make some powerful little demons for around $700. Look for at least 4GB DDR3 RAM, and maybe something like a 2nd Gen Intel Duo i5, or i7 processor. Try to avoid AMD

There are plenty of laptops out there retailing well above $3k. Sager and Alienware notebooks alone can get up to $4500 easy.
OP, if I were you I'd also look into an Asus or Lenovo. Don't bother with seller upgrades on RAM and hard drive(s). You can get 8 gb of RAM for $40 on newegg, and whatever hdd/ssd you want. A grand is a good amount for a laptop that doesn't have to have a fancy mobile gpu. I would check out the release of Ivy Bridge mobile... I could be wrong and it may be a while, sorry I'm not sure. Desktop Ivy is not far away.

This is the one I bought shortly after I put up this thread. I just wanted to show the person that answered me about it being obsolete in a year or two that they were sort of right. I still have it and it is doing fine. What one can get now with the price I paid for mine is almost triple the memory. I still love this laptop.

I personally would go with an HP with a good built-in graphics card, and a minimum of quad core processor, and as 5ht mentioned avoid paying extra for pre-installed memory upgrades. I saw my same computer with 8gb of RAM instead of the 4gb mine came with, for $200 more, and it cost me $45 for two 4gb sticks of much better RAM than the kingston shit they put in it.
I'd also recommend not buying into (pun intended) the hype over the I-3 / I-5 / I-7 processors that Best Buy in particular seems to be pushing hard to market, and there are equivalent processors like AMD that are cheaper, so you can put your money towards the actual hardware and not the name on it.
Your pc will definitely be outdated in 3-5 years as new technology is emerging faster every year now, but getting a high end processor will prevent it from being obsolete. Theres not a whole lot of use for quad-core processors right now unless your running cpu intensive processes like virtualization / emulators, but more programs and applications will start being built to utilize them going forward as those are becoming a computer standard.

I suggest HP solely because they've always been great with customer service with me, and the HP support assistant tool they have is a godsend when it comes to troubleshooting issues with support.
I got an HP that came with a dead RAM slot, and they had the motherboard replaced and the PC back in my hands in a week from contacting support at no cost.
To me customer service is as important as the product itself, and HP is really great about customer service in my book

Last summer I did an internship and worked on HP servers. I got to play around with ILO, Smart Start, and some other stuff. Overall HP makes nice stuff, I was just fooling, hell I am running a HP desktop right now.

Hands down the best laptop I've ever used is my current Sony Vaio VGN-FW. It's a couple years old, so I'm not necessarily voicing my opinion about this specific model, but the brand in general. I've used/had a Dell, Acer and HP. Not only is the performance top notch, but it is by far the sturdiest laptop I've ever used (Acer had a great performance for the price, but a very flimsy build).

I did a Windows install on a Sony laptop a couple months back, and I must say I thought it was nicer than my Acer.

No one has said it yet so I will.
Toshiba.
I've had two of their laptops. One is an X205 SLI3, that I got over 5-6 years ago, and is still running 100%, never had any problems with it. Did I mention I used it as a gaming/video editing machine, and leave it on 24/7? The thing has been ABUSED and still is going full throttle. I only opened it up once to clean out the insides. Thing is a FUCKING BEAST. Toshiba support is also very excellent.. if you ever need to use them. Never had a bad experience with a Toshiba.
Aside from Sony (who also makes top quality products). Toshiba is fucking amazing for laptops.
Not to diss the previous poster, but HP fucken sucks IMO. Working in tech support (for another aftermarket video card company) I hear nothing but complaints about HP.

Toshiba sucks if you run anything other than windows, linux for example. They don't offer fan support as Toshiba has messed with their bios coding to favor windows only. I had mine sitting on blocks of ice for the past couple years...
My Toshiba Satellite bought new in like '96 just died, supremely long lived and decent for the price. If I hadn't seen my own Toshiba arch weld the power plug to the motherboard at random, and then later have a fan issue and literally catch on fire -- I would totally recommend one. Buy a fire extinguisher if you get one
