List Your most Nutritious Foods

...and tell us why they are nutritious and healthy.

Well, it is very obviously quite a popular thread.

My favorite healthy foods are:
oatmeal for the fiber and low glycemic index
flax seed for the fiber and omega 3 content
hot peppers are a strong source of antioxidants and vitamin C

Hmmm...I think someone has been having fun with the "recycle page" button.

Don't forget to grind your flax seeds.  The hull is insoluble fiber, so you will not get the Omega 3 benefits if you consume them whole.

Beef: Delmonico Steak is probably the best- Protein, fats (both healthy saturated and monosaturated with some good omega ratios), cholesterol, micronutrients

Lamb: Leg of lamb preferrably with fat on- Same as above.

Then there's deer, pork, sardines, herring, salmon, chicken and turkey dark meat (with skin on), and almonds.

Thats a good list BUT for the raisin bran. All processed cereals have been ground up. In the stomach they quickly dissolve and convert to sugar spiking the blood sugar. The fact that bran has fiber does not negate this effect. The processing renders perfectly good grains into junk. The only breakfast cereal I consume is steel cut and rolled oat oatmeal. Whole, unprocessed foods tend to be healthier. Processing introduces chemicals and unnaturally occurring food states. Black beans are definitely top notch and I eat a lot of them.

Saturated fat and dietary cholesterol are actually very good for you.

Low-fat diets are very unhealthy.

Where's your research?

Mono- and poly-unsaturated fats are good for you. A diet which includes little or no beneficial fat is unhealthy. Saturated fat and dietary cholesterol have no nutritional benefits.

my girlfriend turned vegan, and i've decided to eat healthier, been eating a lot of veggies, fruits, hempseed, organic products, etc... basically been introduced into a new way of life by researching and visiting organic food stores, etc.

i decided to drink organic milk which i've heard milk is bad for you. still eat a lot of cheese too. i can't give up milk/cheese.

haven't had meat or fish since this started. i plan to keep eating it though, i'm just grossed out cause my girl was reading the book "skinny bitch" to me. don't ever read this book! it will ruin food for you.

i've read soy is bad for you in large amounts (also read the opposite), so i refuse to drink soy milk or eat soy products (it's in pretty much everything that is processed these days), except for tofu which i just tried today. it was alright.

really anyone you talk to will tell you something different on what is healthy. i try to eat a balanced diet, while still enjoying what i eat.

anyone got opinions on if milk/meat is good or bad for you?

Extreme low fat diets are NOT healthy. Small amounts of fat are required for your health. This includes saturated fats, but there is a caveat here. A healthy human should take no more than 20% (give or take 5%) fat in their diet. Only about 10% of this should be saturated, and NONE of the saturated fats should be hydrogenated. An example of a healthy saturated fat is coconut oil, but even that should only be a very small fraction of your diet. A large portion of your dietary fat should be Omega 3 fats.

My opinion is that skim milk is a good protein source, but there is always a question about environmental toxins where milk is concerned.

Tonight I'm making a cream of mushroom salmon over green beans, and a mixed mushroom and asparagus stir-fry.
