Substrate is drying out on the bottom need help.

I have a few jars that are drying out on the bottom. I used 3 cups of water in my substrate recipe for 12 jars. I even did the substrate squeeze test on the LGM dvd. Im using field picked Hpoo which dries out easier but is exceptional for mycelium growth. I live in an extremely dry climate which does not help. Its mainly the bottoms of my jars that are dry middle and top are fine. The mycelium is colonizing everything but the dry parts. I thought about injecting a syringe with water into the jar but the verm barrier has been exposed to the elements. If I do that trich spores will fall in too. What are my best options? Should I just let it colonize the best it can then birth it and let the uncolonized part colonize in the FC? Or should I just crumble it into a monotub substrate?

You might need to turn the jar upside down, at-least that's what I do.

Ive done that before. When I turned it upside down and then turn it right side up my verm filter gets all screwed up and allows trich spores to fallin. I use fine verm and some of it falls through the holes in the lid. I could try taping it with micropore.I could try leaving it upside down until it completely colonizes that I havent tried. Any other ideas?

How do you know they are drying out? How are your jars set up? Also, it would make more sense for the tops to dry out as a) they are nearer the lid and b) water tends to sink to the bottom of the cake due to gravity.

Horse manure with verm barrier? I don't think you got that from the Let's Grow Mushrooms video. How did you inoculate? Also, the bottoms of jars are the wettest part, due to gravity pulling the water to the bottem. Exactly what procedure are you following? The 'field capacity' squeeze test is for bulk substrates, not jar growing. RR

They are 1/2 pint wide mouth jars. The four holes in the lid are just a little bit bigger than the syringe needle. I can see that the substrate is drying out on the bottom. Its bone dry and the mycelium wont colonize it.I believe the bottoms are dry because the PC ran out of water. They werent dry at the bottom when I took them out of the pc.

I just used the 1/2 pint widemouth jars. Used 5 cups verm,3 cups manure,10 TP of BRF and 3 cups of water. I gave the jars a fine verm filter and then used micropore tape on the lid holes. Then I PC'ed it. The PC ran out of water but the jars looked fine. So I knocked up 12 jars with 1cc each under a flow hood. Even though you said the squeeze test only works for bulk substrates it has worked for all my substrates so far. I just screwed up letting the PC run out of water. Now I just need to know what my options are.?
