So they are asking whether I have "ever been convicted of a misdemeanor, felony, or other crime."
I dont want to be asnwering yes to this question...

The question is were you convicted most people plead out of a DUI and just suck up the 1 year suspension of driving privilege. If you went the no lawyer route and plead guilty then if they enter your name against the data base it will show the conviction if it was entered in the national data base which all large city's do, some small towns and rural counties are so under staffed that even major offenses are just sitting in filing cabinets in small courthouses for years. Spend the 30 or 40 dollars to do a criminal search on your own name if no DUI shows then you are pretty much home free if it does the risk is higher. Unless you are trying for a very competitive spot in a high end school a DUI conviction isn't going to make or break you either way providing there isn't other charges. I was a correction officer and did background checks on all new applicants for our juvenile facility and a DUI conviction did not raise a red flag on the applicant but they did show up on a simple check if the applicant was local. I would tend to believe that collages are much the same a DUI is not a life changing conviction. My advice pay for a check if it shows tell the truth if not then the call is on you.

I don't think universities do criminal background checks.

Yeah My 1st thought would be they don't since it costs 20$ for a local and state and 10$ for a federal least in Fla that was what we paid. Lol hell most of the time I sent the applicant out to his local cop shop and made them pay for thire own back round check. We was cheap ass bastards in Duval county.

you won't get turned down for a dui, unless you don't have enough money to give them for tuition, or your school is being run by nazis. all they wan't is money. i have friends with dui's and a few different universities, i don't think it matters much. -bmiles

i'd say, just say no
most places don't really check
if they do check, there's always other uni's
however if this was job-related i might answer differently

I was convicted of DUI and possession of marijuana and said no on my university application. They didn't check and I got accepted. I don't think any of them do...maybe the private ones.

I have had a DUI and not listed it on many different applications. My guess is they will not check. My past experience is a lot of times you get punished for honest about things like that. I hate that it's that way but, unfortunately it is.

Answer yes and attach a short addendum explaining how you've learned from the situation and matured since then. That's the right way to do it because if you say no and they find out, you'll be rejected for sure.

I agree with Redstorm. If you wanted to go the extra mile you include the certificate you received after taking your classes to get your license back. I don't think you are going to have much to worry about on a college application. So many people have a DUI that it really isn't considered that horrible of a charge. I think they would more impressed with your honesty if you put some extra work into your explanation of the charge.

I have a feeling you wouldn't know the first thing about applications to schooling anyways.
I've applied to undergraduate programs, law schools programs, and master's programs. I have a little experience with this sort of thing.
It's best to disclose any sort of questionable legal or ethical situations you may have been part of. As long as you say you learned from your experiences (or at least lie and say you did), the schools will not punish you. On the other hand, you can gamble and hope they don't find out, but if they do. you're fucked.

I know this much: Getting into college is a number crunch, a criminal record is a minus, and there's no bonus points for cute apologies on their admissions rubrics.

Glad we have a member of some admissions board here to guide us.

You're not correct.
You are correct in that it is a number's crunch, but schools also take into consideration letters of rec., personal statements, and addendums to applications which explain disparities.
In addition to my experience in the admissions process, I have numerous close friends and colleagues who either still are involved in the admissions process or have been in the past. They all would agree with my that it is smart to disclose any questionable past history and to explain it in an addendum.

It's great advice if you want to be refused admission.
Lie.
They won't check.

You're basing that on absolutely nothing.
You have no idea what you're talking about.
Eligal: Don't take his advice. It is misguided and incorrect.
