Question about light
    #7833498 - 01/04/08 08:40 PM (16 years, 28 days ago)

Hey, I was wondering whether light is needed through the entire fruiting process, or just until the pins start to form? Also, can someone tell me if I'm providing good enough light: I used a 60 watt fluorescent bulb (i'm doing a very small casing), and I let the mycelium get about 8 hours of light per day, and I've been doing this for about 5 days, no sign of anything. I dont have any type of box or anything to use as a terrarium, so I just covered the top of my casing container with a plastic bag, so is it possible that the plastic bag may be reflecting light off of the casing? Sorry if this might sound dumb, but like I said, it's my first attempt, I haven't gotten a grasp yet on how to perfect my growing. Much appreciated.

I believe it can take up to 2 weeks for pins to start forming.

As others have said, roll a joint, find a hobby and cheeeel.

Light will do nothing for or against the mycelium while colonization is happening. Once it has colonized all available substrate it will help pinning. 12 hours is standard procedure but 8 is better than nothing.

6500k is the spectrum of the light you want. It should be on the packaging of your bulb. Daylight bulbs, some CFL's and MH lamps (used for vegetative stage when growing MJ) all emmit light in this frequency even though the latter is not recommended as it produces too much heat.

6500 Kelvin is the color temperature. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_temperature
As you can see on this page, 6500K is a bright white light, that's what you need.
You can use a fluorescent light. Also, 60 Watt is quite strong, make sure this lamp doesn't produce too much heat.
