for my 401(k) my company matches dollar-for-dollar up to 6%... so of course I contribute 6%.
however out of that money they match, 50% of it is in stock. and I choose which stock.
so far, the options I've chosen have sucked and so far my personal rate of return is -2.6%
I'm losing money.
help?

How long have you been investing for?
The past six months I've lost about 10% on certain investments... still up 16% on the year though.

Anything I post is purely theoretical, and not based in reality. All pictures are from google. A big part of me has died inside and I don't know if it will ever come back. Nothing makes me happy anymore. I use drugs and alcohol to numb the pain, and my sense of humor to hide the rest. I don't share these feelings with anyone in real life.

I would strongly suggest investing in an index fund if possible, or an ETF that will mimic the performance of an index such as the S&P 500 - the specific ETF you'd be looking for trades under the ticker "SPY". This will be a good way to keep pace with the aggregate market while you study up and learn how to pick good stocks (if you have the time and inclination to do so).
Definitely don't put your contributions into the stock of the company you work for, and definitely don't contribute more to your 401(k) than your employer will match. If you have more money that you want to save for retirement, open up an IRA (Roth IRA if possible), and put your extra savings in there.
Also, see this thread: How to Retire Richly - [a discussion of 401(k), IRA, and Roth IRA retirement accounts]

-2.6 means nothing because you haven't cashed in. If you are in growth stocks you can show a negative of -20 for several years and it doesn't mean a thing depending on the fund or the market. As long as you are in a repitable investment firm with good ratings (morningstar ratings) Then you are fine. Educating yourself online is easier than its ever been before with the internet. check out your investment firm and check all the charts for as far back as you can and compare them to other firms. It is also free to get counseling from many.
