Yzz, fresh durian is hard to find, infact some people kill for it. In some native countries its a prized fruit there, it has huge spikes on the outter shell and can kill pople when it falls from the tree. The smell is like sewage but it tastes like vinilla ice cream.

In high school socialology class I had the priveledge to try some, its srsly delicious but stinks a ton. It has a luscious creamy flesh.

I don't mind it. The smell does make me gag a little bit, but it's like eating a very thick custard.

oh yes. i sought out durian for almost 3 years. it has a very short ripe period, so it is hard to get a good one fresh. so i finally tracked down the frozen pulp in a famous Asian foods grocery store in Chinatown.
I will never forget the look on the lady's face as she rang me up. i will never forget the first teaspoon full of that horrid mush. i will never forget how hard it was to get the taste out of my mouth i will never forget how hard it was to get the smell out of the freezer.
eat at your own risk. i believe this is one of those 'great if you grew up with it" type of thing. And i am very open minded when it comes to weird food. -OoD

Get the picture? They smell bad
Apart from the smell, some people tend to get quite sexually stimulated when they have eaten some. The durian is actually psychoactive. That said, I need to add that they smell bad.

I am hard-up to try the Durian Fruit.
I bet if I took a ride to the city (Chicago) I could find it somewhere...

i'm not sure how to describe the fruit...somewhat rich and creamy...did have some vanilla undertones. the candy which i used to eat as a kid was sugary and custard-ish (and didn't smell bad either)
fresh durian is what you need to eat..or the candy...otherwise frozen durian would taste like shit and the taste changes a lot from how it's like fresh

I just tried a durian candy and it's actually kinda good. I think the fresh stuff would be better though.

it has a rich sweet custard like flavor. But the smell is pungent and stank but its similar its strange in its ways of lusciousness .

I don't know what you guys are eating but Durian doesn't taste anything like vanilla ice cream. It has a very strong "rotten fruit" smell like really overripe apples or peaches, and it tastes much milder than the flavor you get from the smell, but for the most part it's a sweet fruity taste with a very soft custard like texture when purchased at most Asian stores fresh it's usually kept frozen because of its pervasive aroma.

Yeah I don't think I would describe it as being like vanilla ice cream... more like someone else said, it's like eating caramel out of a sewer pipe.
Apparently there's also a durian liqueur, the brand name is Shuang Gou Da Qu, if anyone's interested. Although I can't imagine why...

Andrew Zimmerman has a tv show where he goes to different countries and tries exotic foods. He can eat ANYTHING, but when he tried durian he almost vomited.

i have a friend who says he's had it at least 10 times. he still doesn't like it but can tell the difference between a good durian and a bad one. i can't imagine how awful a bad durian would be.
