Money advice for students

So I'm pretty sure there's a lot of shroomerites who, like me, are students and living (surviving?) on a budget.
I'm also sure there's lots of shroomerites who have lots of advice for us students, so why not unite and share your advice? What helped YOU in your times of economical need? You will make us poor, ramen-eating, broken asses very happy

Well, here are a few things that got me through last semester:
Wal-mart allows 3 returns per year without a receipt, I believe they have to be under $50 as well. In conjunction with their no-prosecution for theft under $25.... you can see where this is going.
Buy your weed by the ounce, sell to your friends, smoke for free.
Find a talent that can earn you money. I, for example, do art on commission (PM for details )

I usually have to take out student loans to supplement my bills and lifestyle. It sucks.
After many years, I conclude that tip jobs are almost always the best thing for college students who pay their own way. Both me and my wife have reaped huge benefits from hard work in tip jobs. Waiting tables, delivering, even valet parking.
If you work in the mall or at a fast food joint and cant pay the bills then quit that shit. You can make way more in less hours with a tip job. The caveats are it is harder work, and you have to be better at managing/saving money.
EDIT- @xFrockx - You say that walmart wont prosecute for under 25. Maybe thats a new policy because I was once arrested at walmart in the 90s for stealing a watch worth like $10.

Ahaha that is so awesome. Most essentials can be obtained by using the five finger discount..
I once had a friend who stole everything I mean EVERYTHING he ever used..food,batteries,clothes,ect. He firmly believed in not paying tax on goods because of his non-support of the government...so he just stole everything which provided what he needed and helped him to evade contributing to the federal government through the sales tax.
Haha kid was quite a nutter.
My advice, live at home and commute it's cheaper.
And also, if you have a drug charge in my state, your automatically not able to recieve student loans/federal loans/any kind of loan.
Sucks vag.
Thas why you should prolly vote for Ron Paul for pres in 2008

There is no federal sales tax... He was no freedom fighter, just a dirty thief.

It is VERY important to realize that everything you do now, financially, stays on your credit report for 7 years, so if you fuck up now you will still be affected by it in the future. That means if there's any question you are going to have problems making payments on your credit card, utilities, rent, loans, or anything else--take the initiative to solve the problem. Call the companies and negotiate with them/inform them that you are having problems. Most utility companies and credit card companies are used to this and will work with you to create a payment plan. Don't just dodge the issue/not open the envelopes with bills in them/try to push it to the back of your mind.
Don't live beyond your means. If you need to have a room-mate to afford your place--then do so. If you have to take a semester off to work in order to support yourself through school, then do it! And if you are going to be working while you're in school it's much better to have a slightly lower-paying job that will be in some way useful to you in your future career goals.
I know it is difficult for most people to think about their financial future in the long term, especially when they're in college, but definitely try to do so as much as possible because I didn't and it came back to haunt me years later. I am only now getting most of my college fuck ups off my credit report and I graduated years and years ago. I wish someone at school or my parents had told me that not paying bills on time and letting debt pile up was such a huge mistake.

Avoiding the book stores for new books can save tons of money. Alternatives include going to the library to see if they have what you need (free!) If that's not available, then use tools like Facebook to see if there are people selling the books you need, it will be far cheaper than buying them used from a store.
Don't take classes that don't help you graduate!! Yes, there are interesting classes, but if you take a class that doesn't go towards graduation, then you're wasting that money when you could be taking credits that would help you out. If money is truly tight then you can't afford to be paying thousands of dollars for a class that won't advance you towards they whole reason you're dropping tens of thousands in the first place.
Get a membership to Sam's Club, BJs, or whatever other wholesalers are in your area. Do all your food (and misc.) shopping there. Go with a few people, since I know damn well you aren't going to eat all 1,000 packs of pudding. If you shop in bulk but don't eat it all, you're not really saving shit, so just go in on a double-giant box of cereal with three other people instead of letting it go stale.
I know this one is obvious, but avoid eating out. It may seem cheaper, but if you shop right and smart is isn't. Sometimes you gotta make sacrifices, especially if money is tight, so maybe you won't get to eat delicious food every day, but you're gonna have to settle for mac and cheese and peanut butter and jelly. This kind of goes along with the shopping in bulk, too.
Quit the little things that cost money. This includes weed, cigarettes, unnecessary coffee habits, driving when you could walk or take the bus, and buying nice beer or any beer at all. Man up, you're fucking broke, so quit that shit until you have money.
There's a few things that are fairly obvious yet many people avoid doing. A lot of people that are in college and are broke(ish) aren't used to being broke, so they never actually make any sacrifices because it's so foreign to them.

Oh yeah, those also avoid breaking the law. Unless you're in seriously desperate times, don't be a scumbag. Pay for your own shit, if I have to do it you do too.

The biggest money waster I saw in college was people who buy their lunch every day. Just stupid... thousands of dollars a year.

Don't let the gas meter fool you. A car can last for two weeks when the needle is on E. It's one less thing to worry about when you're a few days away from that next check.
I found that out the hard way.

Haha, the gas thing has some credibility. I drive around on E all the time, I wouldn't wanna try it for 2 weeks though.

ride a bike, cook your meals, don't spend money on needless crap, don't go out clubbing/drinking and spend $100, do odd jobs/start a small business, work alot, get a better job, budget yourself.
