WBS moisture problem
    #7828697 - 01/03/08 06:32 PM (16 years, 29 days ago)

So as I feared my WBS jars have colonized all the good parts and now it's clear that there was too much moisture in some parts of the jars. In some I can even get a small puddle when I tilt the jar at the right angle. Is there any good ways of removing that moisture that wouldn't lead to contamination? Or would it be a good idea to maybe just take the well colonized parts safely out and ditch the parts too wet and not colonizing well?

My problem was I didn't let the WBS dry enough before putting them into the jars to PC. I boiled them and everything the same way I do rye seed but they didn't dry as fast apparently.

I'd say the least colonized jar is about 60% and the most colonized is about 80%, with colonization still going on but at a much slower rate at this point. I'll get some pictures up tomorrow if necessary, I was just hoping someone had a tried and true way of getting rid of excess moisture in the jars.

I actually inoculated the jars by taking selected well colonized areas from another jar I had this same problem with and had no problems with contamination.

did you drain the wbs at all? Or did you just pour the sludge into the jars?
Not to be a total dick but if you did the latter then you deserve to have a failure

I drained for quite some time actually, stirred it quite often, and waited until all steaming and any kind of drainage had stopped. Hell I even bought a special strainer because the one I was using had holes too big for the WBS.

Did the exact process I use for rye seed but didn't know that WBS holds more surface moisture or something, because I haven't had this problem using rye.

weird. Any excess water should have been sucked into the seed or evaporated during the pc process.

I sometime use 35cc of liquid culture to knock up 1/2 gallon jars and there isnt any extra water floating around.

Why is there a spot that hasnt colonized??? You have been shaking the jars, Right?

Shake the shit out of it one more time, get that area to bust loose and colonize

I haven't shaken since about 30% colonization, I'll give them all a hearty shake tonight and see if that helps. There's only one or two jars where I can actually see a small puddle of slightly discolored water about thumbnail size if I tilt the jars the right way, the rest just kind of LOOK wet in the parts that aren't colonizing fast.

1/2 gallon jars, now that's something I'll have to look into.

With WBS I always soak for 24-36 hours and then let it drain for 2 hours and never once have had a problem. Im using Pint sized jars.

Also you could try just flipping the jars upside down, that could help keep the excess water from inviting any contaminants in. I generally do this once the jars are about 70% colonized anyways

Hope I could be of some help :ohwell:

Why don't you guys shake? Shake since 30%? that is completely unacceptable! You stop shaking when they are around 80%

I was thinking about this as well, perhaps letting the filter absorb some of the moisture out of the WBS.  So you don't boil at all, just soak?

I guess I should have checked to see if the process was different with WBS than rye, I just assumed everything worked the same.

As to other questions, they've been in a closet that stays slightly above room temperature for a little over a week, pint sized jars.  Some clearly had more moisture in them than others.

Well I'm only one person, but it seemed to work fine in the past, once colonization starts in all places I haven't really noticed any benefit to shaking. Although I think in this case you might have been right-on as it probably helped re-distribute the moisture building up. Or I'll just lose the whole jars now because the whole thing will be too wet, but hopefully that's not the case.

No I dont boil at all but thats because Im lazy and my method works perfectly for me. Everyone has their own way of doing shit.

I shake my jars at 25%, 50%, and again at 75%. Just helps insure that all my substrate is fully colonized.

I'll give your method a shot for my next go-round.  I did the boiling because of RR's video suggestion that the steam coming off the grain helps dry them better, which apparently I didn't get quite right.

Alright the jars have gone as far as they're gonna go. I've used them to start colonizing a lot of other jars, but now I need to figure out what I should do with them. They're about 90-95% percent colonized with the only part not colonized is the obviously wet part on the bottom.

Does anyone have experience with how I should go about cutting that off and crumbling the wbs keeping the whole thing sterile? Normally I'd just break the wbs up with a bike tire before spawning to the poo but if I have to cut a little section off the bottom should I just break the wbs up with gloved hands in a glove box(bag)? Or should I just keep taking sections to inoculate other jars until I use up all the good seed?

Just cut off all access 'wet' grains, maybe a little more just in case, for contams.

Check out doc's wild bird seed tek. Works wonders.

24hr soak
20 minute simmer (steaming NOT boiling to prevent seeds from bursting, which leads to higher changes of contams)
Load jars 3/4
pc blah blah blah

I'm more asking how do I separate the grains once I have to take the solid mass out of the jar to cut the bottom off of it, since I can't bash the jars on the bike tire at that point.

while they are still warm you need to hit them on the carpet soething soft but firm.
i am a big fan of rye for this reason. Rye doesnt stick ner as bad as wbs and the larger kernels in the rye are badass

Yeah I've been using these jars to inoculate jars with rye because I like using rye much more. But again, my question is since I have to get the WBS out of the jar to cut the bottom (Wet, uncolonized part) off, how do I break the wbs up afterwards? Put it back in the jar, screw on the lid, and then bash? Or should I just crumble amongst the poo with my hands?

I've never taken anything out of a jar and then put it back into the jar, so that's where my concern is.
