Money Matters... You Better Believe it! * 4
    #7828576 - 01/03/08 06:06 PM (16 years, 28 days ago)

Welcome to the Shroomery's first financial district! :sun:

We're here to discuss all things money related.  We all have to deal with money management in one way or another.  Some of us are better at it than others, some prefer to let others take care of it for us, and some just plain don't care.  There are many different approaches to managing your money, and ultimately it is up to each individual to decide which approach is best for them.  But that doesn't mean we shouldn't discuss together, ask questions and teach one another, in turn expanding our knowledge on a topic that affects every one of us on a daily basis.

So whether you're looking to absolve yourself from the weight of crippling credit card debt, you're interested in planning for your retirement, college, buying a home, investing, entrepreneurship, or the tax man - this is the forum that will help you grasp the reigns of your financial future!

Your money will be an underlying theme throughout the rest of your life,
Set yourself up early and recognize that indeed, your money matters... $

Quote:

"Please read before posting referral or affiliate links" from Ythan:
I've noticed a bunch of referral and affiliate links lately in this forum. This is Money Matters and I understand everyone wants to make a buck. But please follow these guidelines to ensure a pleasant browsing experience for all:
  • If you're going to post any type of referral or affiliate link, you should have 100 posts and be registered for at least a month. Otherwise you risk being summarily banned as a spammer.

  • All referral and affiliate links must be clearly indicated as such, and an alternate non-referral link to the same page must be provided. Eg. "if you want to sign up, I get $10 if you use this link, or if you hate me use this non-referral link instead".

  • If you're posting an affiliate link you should have some experience with the program, offer your own thoughts about it, and be able to answer follow-up questions from other members.

  • Use the search, and if someone has already posted about an affiliate program, don't re-post about it or bump the old thread just to add your own referral link.

  • No MLM/Ponzi/pyramid schemes. No "FREE IPOD!" offers where you sign up for a bunch of trials and get a reward.

  • Finally, if you aren't sure whether a link is okay, ask a mod or just don't post it. If you fail to do this and your post gets deleted, understand that it's the mod's call.

These are just some ground rules, and this list may be amended as necessary, but for now just please use common sense and follow the spirit of the guidelines so we don't have to ban referral links entirely. Thanks!

"A Brief Word on Money Matters" from Wiccan_Seeker:
Before participating, it is important to realize that your personal money matters are your responsibility. Taking personal responsibility for your financial affairs is the very first step to take.

Do your own research! Please realize that we're all only human with our likes and dislikes, and that any of us, at any time, could be dead wrong about the advice we give, and not realize it. Do not blindly accept "facts" as gospel truth, but do your own independent research, especially if you want to adopt a certain strategy. Also, in making posts and giving advice, realize that none of us holds the absolute truth no matter how convinced we might be of being right.

Don't be a bystander in your own finances and life, but instead take full responsibility and use your best judgement when making decisions. Empower yourself and take charge of your life, because when you're not behind the wheel - no one is driving.

WS

It opened shortly before you discovered it, but Geokills took the effort to track down and herd a good number of existing ontopic threads into the newly created forum.

Thanks Geo!

I know this is very odd, but what's that old adage? It goes something along the lines of: We're losing a quarter point per unit, but we'll make it up in volume...

Seems to be the way a lot of places are running their businesses...

Just to echo the above posters, but this is always na interesting area - I lurk frequently, and always find myself here.

On the topic of money mattering; to me money is freedom. With it I an do what I want, when I want. To get it I lose freedom, as I have to spend time doing shit I don't want to do.

If I can buy cheaply, I will do, equally if I can find a solid investment, all it is doing is giving me more free time. I also own nearly everything I want to now too, which means I can focus on getting rid of things I don't want, and improving those things I have, and basically just enjoying my life - I am not at a stage there is nothing I really want, that I don't have.

Granted I can't just walk out of the door and buy a 46" TV and take a 3 week holiday, but I want for nothing. This rocks.

Lack of monetary power is holding me back at the moment, but unlimited disposable income is soon to come. Money will be abolished in the near future. Why not have some fun until then? How about WINNING THE LOTTERY?

Well as I see it. The first thing people need to do is stop paying insane amounts of interest to 3rd parties for things you want not need. Your giving away your future in interest payments!

I cut up all my cards 7 years ago. Got rid of the crazy "I have to have 200 pair of shoes wife" and researched and bought a very nice 3 bedroom home in foreclosure for 14k.

The only bills I now have are utility bills each month (saving towards solar array) and property taxes. ($702 a year) No credit card bills, no mortgage, and no stress! woot woot!

You can't change your situation without trying and some sacrifice. I ate simple and went without alot of wants to get the previous stupidity in life payed off. Now when I purchase something. It is done in cash because I saved for it.

Anyone who sets their mind to it will succeed. You just have to tune out the materialisticaly driven psychos (friends and family) until you have reached your goal!

Sorry it took so long to respond to your question. I have not been on lately. I am up North  You can find homes across the country for those prices if you do your homework and scour the mls listings and craigslist listings. Even call your County Clerk and ask about foreclosure listings or Tax sales. Take care!

Life insurance as an investment vehicle [Re: geokills]
    #19130767 - 11/13/13 11:12 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

This was new to me but figured we'd give it a go.

It's been called bank on yourself, infinite banking etc. those names tend to turn me off but I think the premise is sound.

Most people invest the minimum amount in life insurance if at all, but when you look at it and have it set up as an investment vehicle it makes more sense.

If you're putting money into a 401k or RRSP'S then you're gambling on the stock market, and when you go to take your money out you don't know what the taxes will be like.
Two downsides to avoid.

Insurance is a different type of money. You sign a contract and they have to guarantee your death benefit. They make sure it goes up, and compounds on its way.

It has to be set up correctly through a mutual insurance company
Instead pay your premiums monthly which adds to your equity and death benefit.
Through a mutual insurance company, a dividend is paid which contributes to both your equity and death benefit.
Then you can loan against your policy to make major purchases and essentially you're paying the interest back to your fund/policy rather than the bank.
And when you wish to retire, you loan against your equity for living expenses (so its not taxable income) and let your death benefit pay it back. Golden.

It's a long term strategy to be sure. But it makes more sense to me than gambling on stocks and getting in bed with the government through RRSP's.

Anyone familiar with this? Am I understanding it right? Did I miss key points?

First I've heard of it. Reminds me of what I had read of life insurance policies being structured by financial managers to keep their clients' wealth from the estate tax.

interesting,i am lucky to get a new financial-start,regaring credibility after nearly 10 years of deep debt and no credibility at all! the road has been long with awful litttle money and freedom generally, because of this.

i messed up my liquidity when i turned 23 (now 33years old),partying 24/7 for coouple of years, basically just doing the opposite of what can generate money, smart right?

Anyway,in 2016 my new start begins, being some years older and understanding more of the world and the mess around us,i need to invest smart in my new finacial freedom, tired of basically not having money to nothing else than living and food..
I will register and start my own company,im not slaving for another mans empire anymore. But i want more, got to invest in something more than a company. hope this thread goes on with more people so i can learn a thing or two,or even three maybe.

Have been thinking investments in the cannabis industry that is growing, and will grow even more, before the global cannabis-bubble bursts over the entire planet,in a positiv way:bigblunt:

last 6 months i have started to look into the finacial world. ihave a question on a visa credit card. I belive in one card for a safety backup kind of. Visa says:

'Using credit cards is your payment more secure compared with the use of debit cards (debit card) where the money is deducted directly from the account. Invoice will receive by email unless otherwise agreed.

You will receive an invoice from Visa-Credits very beginning of each month maturity will be the 20. You can choose whether you want to pay the entire amount or only paying the minimum amount (about 40 usd) until you have more to spare. More information on payment can be found by clicking on the link with payment information further down the page'.

This a offering to have wider finaciel freedom in a way,for just paying the 40 bucks a month? say the creditt is about 14000usd a year, and people pay about 130 usd a month a lives on the card entirely? this how not to use it right? got to be high interest on this. How do you use your card?
card for me will be visa and mastercard,nation-vise.

Only spend as much as you can afford to spend.  Pick a credit card that has a good reward program (Citi DoubleCash is one of the best available in the US presently), put all of your purchases on your card to accrue the rewards, and make sure to pay off your card's balance each and every month so that you don't pay interest on your purchases.

If you need to use additional credit (i.e. make purchases you can't afford to pay off immediately), you should generally only do this in an emergency and try to find a card that offers a 0% introductory rate for at least several months, or a 0% introductory rate on a balance transfer to your existing card, in the hope that you won't have to accrue interest on your debt before you can pay it off.

Credit card interest rates are generally high and thus credit card debt is not desirable, but because many credit cards offer rewards and all credit cards have a "grace period" (typically one month) where no interest is due, you can use them to accrue rewards and pay them off during the grace period to avoid paying any interest.  Thus, an effective discount on all of your purchases, when used correctly.

The Citi DoubleCash card I have was issued as a Mastercard, but I would not be surprised if this particular card is only available to individuals in the US.  Visa and Mastercard have the highest level of global acceptance, so they are your best choice for a card network.  You should however, still research what kind of rewards each individual bank who issues a Visa/Mastercard in your area is offering, so that you can choose the one that will benefit you most.  It is generally a good idea to stay away from cards with an annual fee.

You know that's so true.  People that want to save money and not throw it down the drain need to stop using those methods and pay cash    Receive cash or pay and .  Pay cash.  If you don't have the money to buy it.  Then don't buy it.  I understand certain things like a car to get to work or car repair or emergencies it's good to have something or some option for a backup.

But honestly and I may get a lot of shot for saying this  I hate the monetary system.    It's done nothing but teach people and children that money is important and you must have it to live.    Yes that's true Unfortunately.    But what happened to barter system.  It died.        Atleast the Bart system taught people respect and to work.  They had to work hard for what they had and if you needed something you had to have something to trade for
It.  Or perform a service to get it.      I honestly think if the world would go back to a barter system where money didn't mean anything.  The rich people now would not be rich in a Barter system.    The hard working people who bust there butts for every thing they have.  Those would be the TRUELY wealthy.    Because they know the meaning of Earning it and respecting those who do work for what they have.    And trade and barter for what they need and want

I read a great book recently that would help a lot of people if they wanted to invest a little time in thinking about their relationship with money.
"The Psychology of Money" by Morgan Housel.
Summary: In The Psychology of Money, award-winning author Morgan Housel shares 19 short stories exploring the strange ways people think about money and teaches you how to make better sense of one of life’s most important topics.
