My back is whack

My back feels out of alignment. It's in the lumbar region. It feels like it is compressed towards my left. It is starting to bug me. I think I just need to go see a chiropractor, but does anyone know any good preventive techniques. I have had this problem before and was wondering if there were exercises that would reduce the likelihood of a relapse.

well first and foremost i would at least spend the money on a preliminary chiropractor visit to see just whats going on. if you feel like something is out of wack in your back, then chances are, there is. and its not good to try and fix anything having to do with your spine on your own. itll probably cost you in between $100-$200 to figure out whats wrong.(maybe less if you have good insurance)
HOWEVER, if you are not in pain, or serious discomfort, then there are a few things i could suggest to help. ill make some suggestions, but then i have some questions that could help me better understand what may be causing it.
do these daily, more than once a day is good. the more the better.
1. stretching(too many to get detailed) 2. tai chi waist spin(stand with legs shoulder length apart, leave your arms flimsy, begin to spin from left to right allowing your arms to swing around and gently slap your kidney area. go left to right and back 50 times or more each session) 3. wrestlers bridge(lie on your back, pull your feet into your ass, place your arms crossed on your chest(you can start out using your arms to help balance yourself until you strengthen your back enough to use your neck alone), now pick your back up, and arch it as high as you can while holding yourself up with your head. when you start you may only be able to hold for 10-30 seconds. once you strengthen your back some, you can do the gymnast bridge, which is the same, except when you get arched, use your arms to pick your self up so only your feet and hands are touching the ground.) 4. practice better posture. always be concious of the alignment of your back. 5.sleep on the floor for a few nights on your back.
now for a few questions.
1. do you exercise? if so, how much and what do you do? 2 how do you sleep? on your side, back or stomach? how many pillows? what hardness/softness bed do you have? 3. do you slouch? stand tall? 4. are you overweight? if so, how much? 5. do you crack your back? if so, how do you do it?
this should help a little.
most people dont realize that most back pain is due to weak back muscles and just plain bad posture.

I know a really good way is to hang upside-down.
It straightens the crap out of your back.
Gravity really takes it's toll on your spine over the years, and it really shows in a lot of people. If you have anywhere you can hang upside down to give your back a break for a little while each day, each other day, or a few times a month it would help immensely.
Whenever I have a sore back, I look for somewhere to hang upside down. I usually don't have anywhere to do it inside, and since it's cold right now, I just hang off the back of the couch. It helps to an extent.
Another thing you may want to try, is put this stuff called 'Biofreeze' on your back. It helps so much with my back pain.
It burns a bit sometimes, but you get used to it, and it really sooths it if it is just sore, or if your spine hurts as well. It's pretty cool stuff.
Hope that helped.
For a place to hang upside-down, find a tree, large chair, or something. I've sure you'll figure out something.

1. yes, yoga, running, and bodyweight training. I'll alternate them but I always shoot for three sessions a week. 2. 93% of the time I sleep on my back. my bed is nice. its not causing the problem 3. I sometimes find myself slouching, but I try to keep aware of my posture 4. I am underweight if anything. six foot three weighing 165 pounds. 5. I don't crack my back at all
