Clinton Judge Blocks Florida Voter ID Law
Wed, 12/19/2007 - 17:06 Judicial Watch Blog

Just six weeks before the states presidential primary, a federal judge has blocked enforcement of a two-year-old Florida law that requires voters names to match their drivers license or Social Security card.

In blocking the law, designed to prevent election fraud, Judge Steve Mickle agreed with civil rights groups that claim the law discriminates against Hispanics and blacks because many Hispanics use two last names and many blacks favor nontraditional names or spellings.

Those factors put the two groups at greater risk of error when their names are matched against the federal database, according to the group that challenged the law, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).

Appointed to the federal bench by Bill Clinton, Judge Mickle agreed in his ruling that there is proof Florida's law has resulted in actual harm to individuals. Criticizing the Republican-controlled state legislature that passed the voter ID measure, he wrote that the disenfranchisement caused damage to the election system that cannot be repaired after the election has passed.

State officials will appeal the ruling, but a decision may not come in time for the upcoming presidential primary or even the presidential election on November 4.

The lowdown on Government crimes against We The People

http://judicialwatch....

The name on your drivers license and SS card should be the same name on your certificate of citizenship. The majority of us seem to know what our legal names are. What's their problem?

I think it's B.S. that a judge is catering to people having an identity crisis, putting the potential for major voting fraud at risk.

Is this a legitimate civil rights issue or just total BS???

I agree with him if common law name change is recognized in florida, as it is in my state.

As long as you don't do it for fraudulent purposes, you can legally call yourself anything you want.

A case a bit ago was made against a guy who decided to be "santa claus" and had a drivers license in that name. He was charged w/ fraud on the BMV, but this was dismissed, as he was going by santa for no malicious purpose, his sleigh (car made to look like a sleigh- seriously) was legally in the name of santa claus, and all his ducks were in a row.

Never bothered to "legally change" his name, which is a misnomer, probate/ other court isn't the only way in some states.

i tend to agree with you.

call yourself whatever you want, but you get one legal name, and that's the one you use to drive, pay taxes, and vote.

I have no problem having people getting one legal name, but make it the law first.

Don't allow pseudonyms and commmon law name changes in all circumstances but elections.

It's not. There is a State law against this for voter ID verification and this Judge decided to block that law on his own authority.

The problem is that, if you grant the right to honest non malicious people with an identity crisis, you may let a potential boat load of fraudulent multiple voters slip in through the back door with them.

I understand changing a birth name. If you want it to be taken seriously, you should get it changed on your certificate of citizenship as well to back it up.

I think the State law regarding Presidential elections is in the right to verify identities by matching a voters registration card to a drivers license or SS card.

What is going to happen when illegals are granted the right to a Drivers License? They can use that alone to get a legitimate voters registration card in the next election cycle then.

See another problem brewing here?

The two last names crap. I know lots of people with hyphenated names and they're all white. If he is referring to anything else it's aliases and that right there is a license for voter fraud, just exactly what this law is supposed to prevent. Pick a fucking name already. Or does that stifle their creativity? Well, they can be as creative as they want, just not at the ballot box. Odd spelling and strange names? What a bigot HE is.

Maybe it is time to stat using dye to mark voters. If somebody wants to vote twice, they are going to have to loose a finger.
