Re: Revisiting Stock Picks for January 3rd, 2008 - STJ, SGP, CVS [Re: CHeifM4sterDiezL]

Google is on a bit of a run today. I bought in back when it was ~$1000 and it has treated pretty well. All of my cannabis and psychedelics stocks are also doing quite well, although the psych stocks have kind of sucked lately. I'm in the psych stocks for the long term though so I am trying to ignore the recent dip.

I've been looking for some green tech investments to make and just can't decide where to sprinkle. I missed the Tesla train already and I'm not super keen to enter at the current price. I'm thinking the green tech sector should make out well under Biden. Any suggestions?

Been a while since I posted in this sub, I missed the run on SNDL today (up 21%) but caught PLTR right before the dip.

I just recently started actively trading again since I’m bored to death in quarantine, up a solid 20% in the past month just scalping movement along blue chip averages.

Thanks The OCB, but remember, you're the one who decided to take the entry, so congrats! Be mindful that MARA can be very whippy, and so you may be wise to trim a little bit off as your position grows, such that you may have that capital ready to redeploy on an eventual pullback.

MARA is BTC centric, BTC is strong right now, but we are still yet to break out of a wide sideways consolidation range.  Volume since the Elon Musk spike on January 29th has been below average, and so I would suggest that we are nearing the higher end of the shorter-term trading range.  This doesn't necessarily mean we fall back in a big way.  The classic "cup & handle" trading pattern is comprised of a weeks long rounded bottom base with a "flag" (or tighter sideways trading at the upper end of the range), which creates the "handle".  This move is considered a continuation pattern which would lead to further upside, and one I would not be surprised to see playing out in BTC.  This is all a long winded way of reminding equity traders that MARA is going to trade generally in line with BTC, and is a good proxy for BTC if you don't want to take custody of crypto yourself... but that the equity stocks that trade on BTC fundamentals, will be volatile, and it is best to skim a little off the rips, and buy a little back on the dips.

Cannabis continues to impress.  I just spent the last few days in Joshua Tree National Park, with no internet or cell service, complete silence (outside of my toddler's occasional screams) and both an amazing sky and landscape.  Nice to come back to see things carried on just fine without me.  Wish I hadn't trimmed back my CGC so much last week, but c'est la vie, you can never catch it all so perfectly.

Anyone know of any emerging markets (3rd world countries) that have tech etfs?  The more I just look at our market here and the price and charts of everything.....I don't feel like buying anything but cannabis.

Anyway, anything from emerging countries involving communications, tech, data.  Yes I saw the MP rec above but that chart doesn't make me exactly comfortable (I have traded it, no way long term right now).

Buy UUP and TLT.
Emerging markets are going to the garbage.

So one tracks the value of the ICE dollar futures in the 'level of' Deutsche Bank Long USD Currency Portfolio Index(...)over time to reflect the changes of whether positive of negative , of long positions in DX contracts. (What any of that means is so fucking beyond me, something tied to the performance of the dollar)

And TLT is an investment in 20yr bond index (government long)

I love the idea, I totally get that this is not investment advice.  I vaguely understand what these do, but why would someone want to hold them.  Especially now?  Just curious...

Looks like I'll be back at my trading desk again tomorrow morning after a much needed weekly break.  As it will be Friday, I'm not sure I'll be doing much, but a few I will be watching:
  • SOLO for a continuation of today's high volume breakout (it failed the last two times on 1/12 + 1/25)
  • TLRY for a move above $27.50 which should take it above $29
  • PLTR for a move above $33
  • AAPL for continuation of today's break back above the 8 day EMA

Funny I was staring at PLTR$ real hard around 3pm.  Went to grab it and realized cash hadn't settled yet. Cannabis is pumping real hard.

All my red flags are going off but with an emerging market like US cannabis how much of my current worry is justified?  Every graph is absurd and I cannot tell if I'm a moron for buying Curaleaf at 15.4 or just making sure I don't miss a magic carpet ride.  :knowwhatnevermind:

Thats why i sold and took my profit on APHA

I rather take what i consider a decent gain at 30% and be happy with my earnings than to get greedy

Retrospect i shoulda kept some in and consider waiting for the pull back to start. But good lesson and good profit for me so im happy. Ill be interested to see what happens and if i was wise to exit or if i left too early.

But i feel like a pull back is inevitable.

Id be keeping my eye out to sell if not selling some now for profit. But thats me

Re: STOCKS - An Intro Tutorial & Ongoing Discussion [Re: The Ecstatic]
    #27187502 - 02/05/21 07:01 AM (2 years, 11 months ago)

Good note The Ecstatic, it's always good to keep an eye on earnings.  If you take the PLTR trade and it runs up into earnings without stopping you out first, you should take at least 50% of it off the table prior to the report.  There is no way to effectively gauge how the market will react to earnings.  That said, if price runs up into the report, that indicates expectations are higher, and thus the probability of a disappointing reaction to the report is likewise a bit higher.  If price falls into the report (well you shouldn't be owning something that's falling in a big way anyway), the market has collectively lower expectations and therefore the reaction to earnings has a higher probability of being positive.  Nevertheless, these are only slight probabilities, and usually not worth betting on.

PENN - forgot to mention this yesterday.  I didn't want to hold this over earnings, but they were out yesterday and the stock popped to a new high.  I picked a little bit up (wish I had bought more but this one tends to move in big numbers and I didn't want to get caught overexposed).  It's up another $3 premarket and I would expect it to continue to grind higher.  Hard to buy on the breakout, but this one typically behaves rather politely with regard to respecting support... so set an alert at the 8 day EMA and 20 day simple moving averages for an opportunity to accumulate.

For more general reading, Nature Boy posted an excellent comment over in the Crypto thread earlier this week, that I want to include here, as it most definitely applies to stock trading:

Quote:

Nature Boy said:
I never worry about that one bit.  If I'm on the positive side by $10.00 I call that good.  You are correct in that there's no point (and an exercise in futility) to time the market.  That's NOT what I'm talking about.  I use analysis to spot trends - wait for confirmation (i.e. several candles in a row and other factors) and then act on it if I'm so inclined.

Will I miss the very beginning of an uptick? Hell yes.  Do I care?  Hell no. If I get a good chunk of change out of the MIDDLE (not bottom nor top) of an uptrend, I have both SAFETY and a profit.  Is it maximal profit?  Nope.  Does it avoid losses?  Yep.

Bolded for emphasis, excellent post Nature Boy.  You are absolutely correct that waiting for a trend to begin to reveal itself, learning to spot those signs relatively early, and then trailing up a sell stop or a ladder of sell stops is the ideal way to catch the meat of a move.  I don't like to put hard and fast numbers on technique, but just to simplify with something concrete; my goal is to catch 80% of any given trend.  I'm not trying to catch a falling knife (aka picking bottoms) and I'm not trying to sell the top.

I'll take the middle of the move any day I can, as it gives me the confidence that I'm not the "first soldier out of the trench" (we know what happens to them), allows me to place an initial sell stop reasonably close to my entry, and bucks me off via my sell stop, which is ratcheted up as the trend continues to mature and therefore takes me out once the trend reverses.

Don't forget to consider the trend across multiple time frames.  You should regularly zoom out and check that weekly/monthly trend.  Those are your primary indicators of the driving force in an asset, the "decision time frame".  Then and only then should you be zooming in to smaller time frames, your "action time frame", to construct your buy and sell stop orders.
