I have so thoroughly been enjoying being out of the market for this period of confusion and volatility.  What a relief!  Drove down to Doheny State Beach to do some surfing two days ago, hit an unexpected rainstorm half way down there, but it cleared up 15 miles from the beach and we were treated to a beautiful sunset over the water and under the distant storm clouds.  Followed up with fish tacos and a schooner of double IPA.  Beat the heck out of sweating the market!

But just to keep things on topic...

Speaking of cyber security, PANW reported a great quarter this week, FTNT is another big dog in the same sector and doesn't report til October.  This sector is poised to see sustained growth for the foreseeable future, so if we do see a bigger market crash, I would highly recommend sticking at least one of these on your shopping list as you pick through the rubble.

I got to witness speculation on news! It was awesome % gain, and in the course of the morning it had dropped back down.
did anyone here make money on the tesla down to 220 back up in 2 weeks 260?

BBD.B has gone from 1.20 to 1.8

Good to take some time off and glad you had some fun!

For me, I haven't been trading until lately, so it's kind of a treat.

I'm still short HD via Jan 2016 120 and 125 strike puts.  At about break even or a little loss but expecting another retest of at least 108 area or lower.

Made some $$ on FCX and MRO covered calls 10% in about a week, all called away as both stocks spiked.

Added some MRO and sold Sept 18th 15.5 strike calls against.

Bot some QQQ Nov 107 puts today. AMZN seems in particular overvalued, MSFT as well, AAPL not so much but chart looks doggy.  Other overpriced tech stocks that could get smacked with any big downturn.

Keeping some powder dry for next week.  Seems to me what I see as a huge monstrous bear flag should at least retest some kind of low.  When the QQQ traded to 82 on Aug 24th based on a "technical glitch" should we expect anything near that level on any kind of closing basis, or just a big dip of a toe in the deep pool?

Rode RIG up from $12.71 to $14.85.  Glad I got out before it got smacked down today.  It's now trending above the 50DMA but it's outlook over the next few years looks bleak.  I'll see how RIG reacts to the interest rate decision and go from there.  I was just reading their shareholder meeting transcript the other day and even they are predicting low oil prices well into the 2016, and at least to them, M&As are probably still a while off in the industry with most companies pretty much hiding in their shell trying to ride things out.

As such, switched to FCX, with a wider spread of commodity trading including oil, gas, copper, and gold, which has been trending up since the crash.  It will be interesting to see if that is due to the stock itself or due to Carl Icahn acquiring an 8% stake.  I plan to acquire shares over the next couple months.  It appears that the copper miners are doing a better job of attempting to regulate supply than the oil drillers.  The 50DMA is approaching.  If FCX pushes through, that should be a favorable signal.

I am expecting that we will see another leg down to test those flash August lows before the year is out.  But ya never know!

guh, interest has waned in the matters months have to pass before news and such.
Option Price x Number of Contracts x Multiplier + Commission = Total Cost

$24.00 x 200 x 100 + $259.95 = $480,259.95

this is how my bank calculates the contracts cost.
Price of the option?
and then what contract is there like 100 shares per contract or something?
whats with this astronomical number and how do I realistically enter options.
In addition, the math up there is similar to the APPL iPhone repair charges to a visa. Not understanding something like options but then still trying to do them is full of folly I'm sure.

today's trading began 20 minutes ago already, best luck on the up and up thanks for any response to this post in advance.

THANKS GEO, I have a question about social and cultural dynamics effecting the stocks.
In times of turmoil I noticed the recent media blitz that covered the economy for two weeks straight without spreading any economic education.
I think that controlling your own money outside ETF's is wise and also that money in penny stocks almost didnt affect at least the penny stocks i was invested into. thanks buds

Precisely, 100 shares = 1 contract.

So 200 contracts = 20,000 shares and you are talking about a $24 price per contract so almost half a million dollars (24*20,000).

Realistically, I suggest avoiding options at all cost. You can wipe yourself off in a matter of days.

But, if you do get in, buy only 1-5 contracts between .30 to $3 / contract. Anything over that is just too expensive.

1 contract at $3 is already over $300.

If you are new you have no business buying more than $200 to $300 worth of options, because odds are, you will lose it.

I paid 1.2 for JTR, I was glad to see a recovery to 1.2.
The brand acquired Love Child, adding to their collection of brands selling good looking food, IME expensive, however the amount of Mercedes and BMW driving around I don't think that cost of product matters.
Fairly basic product I mean all it is a sleeve of nutrition with a fancy spout, with 50% profit per package.
One must look at the fact the co-creator of Love Child: an investment banker  is now in the company and continuing leadership of the brand inside of JTR.
I had a sell for 1.3 for a clean 40$ profit over the summer; however,
selling this no more. This will take its respectful seat as the flagship of my savings and investments. JTR and LRE are both low purchases and by the financials I'm glad to have, I should have got it down in .7 but you cant win them all. The interest in the brand isn't main stream by the seams of it, might want to look at this company that does dairy, pet food, meat, and baby food.

Be careful. All the insiders and hedge funders are out of the stock market or currently getting out. They know what's coming. It would be unwise to be exposed to the market for anything except intraday trading at this point. I'm telling you dude. Don't expose yourself. I don't care how good the fundamentals are for what you're buying its a bad choice. Buy and hold in a bear market is asking for losses. Even if you don't believe a crash will happen the Dow is hitting lower highs and lower lows a couple of times and just broke a significant support line. The downward trend is all but confirmed, the only point of question is whether it will be an easy or violent ride down.

Oh, I hope it's violent.  Just SOOOOOO tired of hearing about The Fed and their lies about a rate hike.  Nine years?  What a load of crap.  ZIRP is the cause of our problems, and the bubble needs to burst and spray shit all over the place.

well how come my ETF's are up for the first time in the year? finallly they came out of nearly 10% combined loss. just broke even.
and they are penny stocks I sincerely believe that smal cap wont be effected by the big occurrences and my reason for that is in a book I'm almost done reading it says that basically all money managing places and banks n stuff right? they all move primarily in blue chips.

The big banks don't trade like they used to on any stocks, which is actually becoming a problem.  Liquidity isn't a problem on the way up, but on the way down, it can be a huge problem as we saw Aug 24th.  Nobody to buy, and everyone wants to sell, leads to huge price discovery issues.

You are lucky for the volatility to get your losses back; you should get out while you are ahead. Etf's are a good short right now. Buying them is betting that the stock market will keep going higher.

You can play on the stock market if you want man but learn basic technical analysis at least. It's not hard to learn. If you don't know how basic patterns and trends affect price action you might as well be gambling blind. I don't know anything about penny stocks except that they are largely pump and dump scams. The regular stock market also basically functions like a large pump and dump scam at the public's expense. If it tells you anything, hedge fund money is being put into foreign investments and is generally reducing risk to dollars and dollar denominated equities.

@ lunar yeah its getting interesting. I am anticipating a sharp 60-70 percent drop worldwide caused by some significant event. Maybe when the US defaults. I heard the us bond market might crash on Oct 1 and cause full scale riots lolol. Or the feds actions might have given us a few extra months. Hard to say. The rest of this month will be very telling.

I think we will likely be retesting the 1870 level at a minimum.  The big bear flag formed right up to 2020 which was a good thing to have fill then fail yesterday and today.  The chart now looks officially shitty with falling out of the flag today.

It will be interesting to see how the knuckleheads at the NYSE react given any real selling or "technical issues".  I would expect any cyber shenanigans or other mischief to be in their arena based on recent history.  Aren't they still doing Rule 48 every day even though CNBC is mute on the issue?  The opening of my HD stock that I'm short with puts is a freaking joke.  What happened to price discovery before the opening, instead of the wide spread minutes after the "opening"?

Haha whoops I was looking at the wrong chart yesterday. Yeah I guess we broke the support level pretty hard just now. You might be right about retesting. Those guys know about shemitah right? They can't be that surprised when a sell off happens. Hah a wide opening spread has pros and cons lol. I'm sure some scalpers and early range traders like the volatility lol.

I'm sure there's whole faculties dedicated to preventing such a happening. Who would be the observers and who would be the ones taking action in such an event?
