Bought some more Altria Group - MO this morning.

I always wish I had more MO, but it always feels like its trading up and there aren't any sweet entry points.  It's one of the greatest performing stocks over the last 40 years with a firm commitment to value for shareholders. Its traded down from its high in March and it should have its annual dividend increase announced shortly to likely .56 / qtr for a dividend yield of 4.35% based on today's price.

The bank of Canada is about 50/50 on a rate cut tomorrow and with the Fed projected to increase rates within a few month the Canadian dollar will get slammed if they go in divergent directions, some may have been priced in already, but I would be hesitant to add more CDN funds.

MO is a great stock, without question (though a pretty nasty business ).

We got our Greek deal.

The breakout in ULTA has been working fabulously, and while it is still looking good longer term (check out that weekly chart), it would be difficult to enter right here.  I sold my position this morning for a 45% profit and will look to re-enter on a move back toward $160.  I have added VIRT to my portfolio - a high frequency trading firm.  They basically print $ for themselves through their privileged access to the markets, word is they have only lost money on one trading day since they opened up shop, and they're the only publicly traded high frequency trading firm.  I also added MTSI this morning, as it looks like its having a solid bounce off of its 200 day moving average, offering a low risk entry with a stop just below today's low.  It is in the semiconductor industry, which has been under pressure and is NOT a strong sector of the market right now, but this particular stock is showing buying here with very well defined support.  Earnings are reported in two weeks on the 28th, so I'll probably be closing this position before then (or at least most of it) since who knows what they'll report.  GILD looking frisky with a bounce of its 50 day moving average as well.

Worth noting that the market has been up big the last two days.  The removal of uncertainty surrounding Greece is a major comfort to the market, but it is important to remember that aggressive buying should always take place early in a move, so that you are buying closer to support.  Right now, the S&P is starting to close in on resistance again, and thus caution should not be thrown to the wind.  Take the opportunities you see, but be mindful that looks can be deceiving.

Stock Update for July 16, 2015 [Re: Ahab McBathsalts]

Thanks for putting this one back on my radar.  I saw it breaking out of a bull flag pattern this morning and picked up a handful of December $50 calls.  Already up 20%

Tried to short NFLX via puts this morning, got stopped out for no gain/loss.  Should've been paying attention because it really took off once it broke above its opening print.  Oh well, it's been trading flat for the last hour and I can't in good conscience buy now that the stock moved up 14%+ and is sitting well above its 3rd standard deviation bollinger band.

TTPH had a high volume move yesterday that pushed it above its upper bollinger band for a brief moment, it's back up today testing that level, which also happens to be its all time high.  Long Nov $40 calls, which I added to this morning using the 8 hour EMA as buyable support.

Holding sizable positions on VIRT via Dec $22.50 calls, AMBA via Sept $100 calls, GILD via Sept $110 calls and FB via Sept $85 and Jan $75 calls.  I closed 50% of my GILD calls yesterday and a quarter of my FB calls, just as a function of discipline, to book profits, since the major indices are back at the top of their ranges and I would not expect an immediate breakout after such a strong bounce off of the 200 day moving average.

I am taking a gambler on AAPL's earnings, via some July 24th $130 calls (company reports earnings Tuesday after market, these options expire three days later).  They're cheap and I'm not going in big.  But I figure AAPL is within striking distance of its all time high after a long period of consolidation, so if the numbers are good, we could see a breakout from this high base.  On the other hand, if AAPL gaps up on earnings but can't break through its all time high of $134.54, I think that would be a good setup for a quick short.

I can't believe how deadly strong PANW has been.  Been trying to snag some Jan $170 calls with some low bids but never getting filled.  :foreheadslap:

So here is a bit of an odd question only slightly related to this thread.

So hypothetically speaking I live in the U.S.. Naturally I am able to invest in the U.S. stock market, if I wasnt living here it would be a bit more complicated. So if I were to become an ex-pat my ability to evade taxes or maybe even launder money would increase, so there are a lot more regulations and forms for U.S. citizens living outside of the U.S.. However this can be a pain so most brokerage firms, instead of completing the paper work, are known for freezing accounts; leaving the investor up shits creek without a paddle and will likely have to change firms. However in my hypothetical situation I am going to leave the country for a bit, but not permanently -- I would still be partaking in U.S. taxes. However, due to my I.P. address being tagged as out of the country for an extended period of time, my brokerage firm will believe I am living abroad and is likely to freeze my account. So this leads me to my question: What would be the best way for someone in that type of situation to avoid the hassle of having their account frozen? Contact their brokerage firm? Use a VPN? Other suggestions?

An article on the topic with more details for those who are interested.
http://www.expatfocus.com/c/aid=1192/articles/financial/why-is-my-us-brokerage-firm-closing-my-account/

And in order to keep the post on topic. Companies that I've recently gotten shares in are GILD, LB, NTI, PBCT, and WFC. Both GILD and WFC have strong charts and are solid companies. LB is a bit more iffy as far as the chart and company goes, but I can't help but like their stores (Victoria's Secret and Bath and Body Works) and I think that long term the company is solid. NTI is a bit more variable in price and yield, but I think the company has handled oil price fluctuations in stride and will grow into a good dividend providing company. PBCT having a decent chart and as a financial I think they are poised to perform well if the government ever increases interest rates. A company I'm looking at purchasing is a small unknown company with the ticker BCRH. With a goal of an 8% yield and a yield of 10% last year as well as a pretty good looking chart I can't help but be interested. They deal in insurance and would perform poorly if the Caribbean were to be hit with a bad hurricane, but rumor has it that this year will be less intense than in the past.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend.

First thing I would do is contact your brokerage by phone and indicate that you would like to open an account, but need to know about their procedure for maintaining an account while living overseas, as your job/family/etc requires you to spend extended periods travelling.  If they are quick to assist you with a thorough explanation and assurances of how you can open such an account, you likely won't have much to worry about.  If you need to fill out some additional forums, so be it.

Alternatively, the use of a Virtual Private Network should suffice.  I've logged into my TDAmeritrade brokerage account from several countries overseas without incident, although never for periods longer than three weeks at a time.

I'm not sure the tax rules in the USA, but residency rules are very complex.

Almost all countries tax citizens based on residency, except for the US which taxes on citizenship. I would search the IRS's website with your specific question, or worse case call an accountant and find out.

In Canada you can be in the country for only 180 days a year and still maintain your residency.

AAPL on sale today.  Forward guidance on earnings report was disappointing to market, but they still beat on top and bottom line, and are trading at a discount relative to peers with comparable growth rates.  A rare opportunity to buy near the stock's 200 day moving average.  Added October $120 calls @ $6.

I'm looking for a nice rally tomorrow to end the week. The S&P 500 is right at the 50 day moving average I think it will bounce off of it nicely. I bought July 31st $30 calls for E Trade at 52 cents ahead of their earnings announcement after close today.

Well it looks like I choose the wrong horse. Should have bet on one of the other companies reporting earnings today... With these better than expected earnings from Amazon, Starbucks, Visa and others it should be a good day for wall street tomorrow. Hopefully it's enough to boost ETFC a couple points despite their narrow earnings miss.

General Motors finally did something other than continual disappointment. The stock is still so cheap by most metrics, but it's having a hard time turning it around.

Jimmy Cramer railed against it earlier in the week, so it must be about time it comes back in style and gets some gains.

Yeah saw GM pull off some almost 5x profit. $278 million a year ago to 1.2 billion world wide profit. Under valued for sure but that's because of the stake. These companies can put one wrong part in an entire line of vehicles and have half their profit tanked from recalls. Solid engineers running the bids and not business managers was always the motto.

Well for anyone who was wondering, I finally got around to calling my firm and the answer was that Scottrade must freeze accounts that are accessed from outside of the United States although they might be able to be reopened once back in the States. A bit annoying that they act like it is a mandatory action on their behalf, but in actuality it is their firm taking the easy way out of a situation. So I'll be looking into a VPN sometime soon.

On a side note, I hope GILD beats earnings tomorrow.. past 2 days have been a bit rough to watch.

I have been thinking about adding a health care stock to the portfolio and GILD looks fairly cheap from p/e and roe metrics.

I will need to do some more reading of their annual reports and filings, but it seems like a very reasonable company in this space.

If you add GILD, just be sure to realize they post earnings tomorrow. I was drawn to GILD for the p/e ratio, a decent dividend, good analysts, good history of buybacks, allegedly (from what i've read) good at acquisitions, and a good chart. The chart, I still do like despite the past few days.

Here is a bias to the upside article http://seekingalpha.com/article/3360765-is-gilead-a-buy-pre-earnings
