I picked up some call options for SLV (silver based ETF) that expire on the 26th and Strike at $16 (current price is $15.36) for $0.06 I'm thinking I would like to double up then sell them and buy back in at a much longer position, perhaps the $21 call expiring in January.

Hi guys How does someone know when he/she can competently be self directed? Know how I would guess; further, this question: What makes a person fit to money manage themselves, family and friends?
One step further I've heard of personal mortgages but what separates or is there preventative measures from anyone being able to start a financial institution?
Knowing how to spell instatution matters I would gamble.

I also picked up some additional October $65 calls on the CYBR, since the high volume breakout over the last two days is playing out in textbook fashion, with a lower volume pullback to test the breakout level today. This is one of my favorite trade setups by far, and the company itself is in a great industry (cyber security), which is getting a lot of play due to all the high profile hacking/information attacks that have been taking place, and will likely continue to take place.

Just wanted to follow up on this trade, as this pattern is worth noting (and noting again), so that you will learn to recognize its dynamics in the future and hopefully capitalize off of it. As expected, the breakout and subsequent pullback was met with buying upon a retest of the breakout level, and the stock just continues to march higher on high volume.

The cyber-security sector in general is on a tear, as evidenced by the serious pickup in trading volume on the ETF HACK, which represents a basket of these stocks. I am also long several Sept $30 calls on HACK, which are up over 100%, and for which I am keeping a stop that I maintain just below the current day's intraday low.

In other news, got shaken out of my BAC calls for a small profit, the banks are still behaving well, but didn't react in a meaningful way to yesterday's Federal Reserve statement, and as that was one of my catalysts, I have decided to let this one drop for now, although I still hold a long term position in the XLF, which is an ETF for financial stocks. On the buy side, I've been buying August $95 calls on MA which is expanding to the upside out of a volatility squeeze, I have a covered call position on GDDY that will almost surely be called away tomorrow, I own August $100 calls on SWKS which looks like its just starting to expand to the upside after squeezing a bit, I've been building a position in CELG which looks to be a touch-and-go (having descended to its 200 day moving average and bouncing higher through its 50 day moving average on high volume today), and added to FB and TTPH today.
I would be remiss not to note, the S&P and Nasdaq is bumping back up against the top of its long and frustrating consolidation range. This is generally not the best place to be buying, but there are several positions that have been working for me and I want to add (while keeping a snug stop in order to manage my risk). The fact that the small are breaking out to new highs and the transports have at least started to hold a short-term base is also encouraging.
Full position list:
- CYBR covered call, Oct $65 calls, Oct $70 calls
- GDDY covered call
- GPRO Jul $60/$65 bull call spread
- MA Jul $95 calls
- FB Aug $80 calls, Jan $75 calls
- SWKS Aug $100 calls
- HABT Sept $35 calls
- HACK Sept $30 calls
- VDSI Sept $30 call (sold most of this position yesterday, keeping a placeholder)
- CELG Oct $115 calls
- BABA Oct $90 calls (very short leash on this one, it's not behaving well)
- OA Nov $75 calls
- TTPH Nov $40 calls
- XLF Jan $25 calls
- SUNE Jan $20 calls, Jan $25 calls
- MNKD Jan 2017 $5 calls
- NE Jan 2017 $15 calls
- AAPL Jan 2017 $95 calls
- LINE Jan 2017 $13 calls

ahab made a damn nice call on ENF i as in tehre at a better price then him and sold out of it i could have made like 60 bucks since then! I'm under the school of thought that believes though the only reason that it gained is because of my purchase and sale.

Hi, working with only 1.5k had not read the first page in ages, re reading and it could ave saved some redundant posts and explains interest in LRE, Its a penny stock now but it just couple months ago was worth a few bucks. Walking to the TSE/banking core with my camera, thinking of getting a suit on before.
PS few hundred dollar holdings anyway and I had gone into this willing to take 1000$ learning experience, I go around telling my peers how easy it is to get a TFSA account and pay yourself first.

so greek banks are closed for the next 6 days, after several days of runs on the banks and atms going dry.
i wonder what effect the potential, but seemingly loomingm greek default will have on world markets.... ive been of the opinion for about a year that the markets were over valued, mostly because of the prolonged artificial inflation of value through absurdly low interest rates.... perhaps this will be the straw that breaks the camels back?

It definitely could. Especially considering the worrying state of China's stock market. The head of the fed says equities are overvalued and I agree it's only a matter of time before we see some short term correction.

Well it's bound to be hardest on the euro zone markets, but frankly, I think that Greece's people will place their votes on their July 5th referendum to comply with the EU's bailout terms and ultimately strike a deal with their creditors, thus keeping them in the EU. It certainly doesn't feel that way today, with our markets down rather sharply and testing the bottom of their 2015 ranges, and Greece likely to go into default with the IMF with respect to the $1.6 billion they owe them due tomorrow... but EU leadership has repeatedly expressed their willingness to get back to discussions with Greece on how to resolve these matters and keep their bailout intact, and ultimately the Greek people, after realizing that they are losing access to their money, should succumb to common sense and agree to allow government reforms (i.e. reduction of entitlements) in order to stay on the Euro and continue to receive liquidity assistance for their banks.
If neither side blinks, I still believe that damage from a full fledged Greek default and exit from the EU will be relatively contained. It's not like this is a new issue, after all. Markets and specifically EU nations with exposure to Greece have had years to read the writing on the wall and thus prepare themselves for the worst case scenario. Not saying it'll be pretty, there will likely be an initial shock (as we are seeing today) and aftershocks that could definitely lead to a break of our prevailing market uptrend, but we should remember that the Greek economy is a relatively small part of the global economy. Nevertheless, confidence in the euro will be shaken and there will no doubt be specific players who did not position themselves for a Greek failure and thus fail in turn.
For the record, I mistakenly believed that a deal would have been struck this weekend, and am paying the price for positioning myself in such a way last week. I literally hit a yearly high in my portfolio last week, and today am closing in on a yearly low. Rather frustrating when this happens, but it is a part of trading. We'll see how the S&P acts as it closes in on its 200 day moving average near 2050. All in all, the selling pressure today is at a fever pitch and I would expect to see some sort of bounce, but even though I do think Greece will find a way to prolong their bailout, this will be an issue that will continue to disturb the market for some time to come.

Of course Greece will be doing a deal with the EU. The votes can always be rigged just like the Scottish Referendum, and they of course will be. Yes, of course even though we voted in a government that told us they will be leaving the Euro, of course we want to stay. And why wouldn't we? We love more austerity!

I don't expect the Greeks to vote in approval of the EU deal. Despite what EU official have been saying that doesn't mean they will leave the union. Neither side wants Greece to leave. From what I've heard the legality of kicking them out is very questionable and they won't leave without being forced.

TSE:XAU moved up I had 4.6 limit order and ended up canceling before the stock reached 4.6 the following two days showed this stock piling on up to almost 6.5, in the 300$ i had in on that It would have made 130$! whew! what about the low oil price per barrel and the seemingly marginal damage to market value of companies? do you think this represents a "true" value of these things? as people wonder about energy sectors and clean this and that, maybe it shows in economy as just basically reducing the business values on the market. I have a new listing or two on CVE:TTR <TITANIUM TRANSPORT 2.9 CVE:JTR < CLEAN FOODS 1.16 CVE:SGB <DISRUPTIVE FRIENDLY PLASTIC .2
TSLA IS UP 4% (10$) AND I'm looking to buy into this one even still reading elon musk its undervalued and will probably be a company that converts to a car surpassing mechanism. One thing about TESLA is that it is developing its robotic construction capabilities behind a guise of car production.

So we've seen some interesting action in the market with Greece voting no in their refferandom. Although the market didn't seem to care toooo much.
So I'm curious what y'all think of the energy sector, namely oil stocks. They are being beat down because of the threat of a slowing china and a Greece in turmoil, aka less global demand. I feel like this is a bit overly dramatic and that oil is about at a long term bottom.
More specifically I had been keeping an eye on COP, which was performing well until recently. The close today below $60 today makes me feel insecure about this stock.
Anyone have any opinions on this sector, stocks within the sector, or specifically on COP?

Well the market (i.e. S&P) is attempting to carve out support at its 200 day moving average, but I'm not feeling optimistic about this level holding. I actually ended up raising quite a bit of cash today, selling out of about half of my positions. There are a couple that I'm still in rather big, like TTPH and FB, but overall the Greece thing is going to drag on for who knows how long, China's market has been falling rapidly despite tons of government stimulus, looming interest rate hikes are a headwind, Russia is a wildcard that isn't active now but surely could be, and the major moving averages on most major indexes are starting to bend downwards. It's quite simply not a feel good market, not an easy market to be sure, and not something I want to stress and agonize over. A big part of long term success in the stock market, is knowing when to sit out and observe, and I think that this is likely to be one of those times, because there are just too many negative factors and wildcards at play with lots of headline risk.
In so far as energy specifically, I wrote about wading into some names months ago (LINE and NE), and those trades, while they were briefly very profitable, have not maintained their strength and have in aggregate been losing me money (I own calls expiring in 2017). I don't like what's happening in energy, but if I had to put money into the sector, the refiners look like a good place to be. Check out VLO, PSX, MPC, they have all been consolidating for months and started to break out this last week. That's pretty much the only area in energy I'd like to be. Hell, I even ditched my long standing position in SUNE (a solar stock) today, as it flirts with its 50 day moving average. Note that I wouldn't hesitate to buy this one back if it does bounce back with a close above $30, but I just didn't want to hold it and risk giving back my gains since the market overall is, at the moment, susceptible to a particularly wide array of cross currents and thus exceedingly hard for me to game.
I am keeping my eyes on cyber-security, which has been beaten up quite handily over the past couple of weeks, after having broke out to new highs on the heels of the US government's Office of Personnel Management's highly publicized data breach. The volatility pop in CYBR that I noted a few weeks ago has been completely reversed, and after reviewing several stocks in the sector, I prefer FEYE and VDSI for an opportunity to enter (I caught the last runup in VDSI and sold near the top - wish I could've said the same for CYBR but that one turned into a big loser for me). Neither FEYE or VDSI are as richly valued as CYBR, and both have pulled back to support, but haven't yet shown convincing signs of buying at this level. If I see buyers come in, I plan to become one of them. I'm also watching biotech, sold my CELG for a profit this morning, hoping for more of a pullback to re-enter at $115, and also watching REGN and GILD for opportunities.
But I'm going to be picky, and happy sitting on cash for the most part. This market is a mess, with too much uncertainty to have any real confidence in longer term moves.

Well in light of today I would agree that I should have done similar activity and moved towards cash. I had though the market would be much more stagnant today, but it appears that I've under-estimated the impact of the Chinese markets.
Either way, appreciate your thought out response as it provides food for thought.
Note, I also like GILD and they were one of the reasons I was a bit overly optimistic today from their performance yesterday, but today...
Good luck

Some buyers are coming into the S&P now to help hold the 200 day moving average. Nibbling on some VDSI and GILD now, with the stocks trading around $26.30 and $113.60 respectively.

Surprisingly strong close. I added to GILD and FB, and started a new position in ULTA, which is breaking out of a tight volatility squeeze at its 50 day moving average.

Still keeping a lot of cash on the sidelines because we effectively closed right at short-term resistance, but I must admit the high volume long tailed candle today is encouraging. Let's hope it's not a bull trap!
