concerning LC mycelium
    #7827199 - 01/03/08 12:14 PM (16 years, 29 days ago)

I 'nocked up some WBS jars with LC a little over a week ago and the myc looks slow and weak. it's mostly tomentose and not very rhizo like I've seen before with my grain jars

the LC that I used is several months old, probably going on 7+ months. does LC mycelium degenerate after time? I 'nocked up some PF jars with it too and they also look weak and just not very rhizomorphic, and the PFs that I do always tend to look very rhizomorphic, even with the same LC used a while back.

you should change your lc's monthly. Are you storing it in the fridge. Just because you cant see contams in the lc it doesnt mean its clean.

as for stalling, it should regain its vigour once it is on the new substrate

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

thats what I've been thinking, once it has a new source to grow on it should sorta pick up again, and maybe it still will who knows

yeah I do store them in the fridge, I just recently bought more spores so I can start making some new ones again

idealy you can put those spores on agar and then transfer to the lc.

Most people get away with making lc from spore syringes or straight from the print. These usually work fine but....
You can not see contams or bad growth charactorisitics. Contams are not always visable on substrates but cause problems in growth that only an experienced mycologist can see.

Starting an lc with a chunk of agar off of a petri dish is the way to go. The mycelium will grow thicker in the lc then it would if it were multispore or cottony mycelium

How does one go about innoculating some LC with a chunk of agar? Is it as easy as taking off the lid of the LC in a glovebox and plopping the chunk of agar in? Or do you suck up some agar in a syringe and shoot it into the LC? It seems like opening the LC jar would make it very prone to contams.
