Nice hand!

I play a lot of poker. When someone catches a great hand, it is a common practice for another player at the table to comment. "Nice hand!" Rarely, if ever, will another comment "You played that well." The first statement in effect praises the player for merely receiving good cards as if that were some talent that they had control over. I find this to be supercilious.
I also play a lot of racquetball. When an opponent sprints at full speed to retrieve a difficult shot then blasts it with precision into the corner, I will often say, "Nice shot!" because I appreciate the effort, training and skill that went into the play. His past efforts are displaying themselves and that, to me, is admirable.
DO you think praising or damning another for some gift or curse of fate, that they had nothing personally causal to do with, makes any sense? Have you done it? Why?
I have heard it on these boards all-too-often in the guise of karma.

When I say "nice hand", I am not talking about how it was played, I'm talking about the strength of the cards...
If you have AK suited in the pocket, and AAK flops, you have a NICE HAND, regardless of how you decide to play it...

And WTF is the point? Any player who has played for more than one day recognizes the strength of the cards. Are you proud of your elemnetary ability to identify such a grouping and demonstrating your knowledge to those unaware that an ace is bigger than a king?

Why don't you take your weak debate elsewhere. You can't handle this forum.

You DO realize that this was a real thread with a valid topic for discussion having nothing to do with cards or movie stars?

Hmm, because they think the game is more about luck than skill ?!
Are you a 'snake player' ? Those who start low, even with a big hand, and then raise dramatically ?
(I seriously did play 5 draw only yet)

OK, now expand your understanding out to non-poker events. Don't get too focused on the analogy.

Ok, someone has some good starter position and plays it well, he will win big. Has good StarterPosition and plays bad, wins low. Has bad SP and plays well, he wins little. Has bad SP and plays bad, looses.
That's all I got so far Even there is never a guarantee to win big with a good SP and good playing, isn't there ?

Considering that in poker nothing is ever guaranteed and things can quickly change in the matter of one card flip, I don't think it would be superfluous to compliment someone's hand because it has superior odds. I say this because whether you have AK or J4 in your hand, neither gets you a win automatically. Either hand still needs to be played.
To use racquetball (how much different is it than squash, if at all?), if you play a difficult ball well, you may hear some praise for your efforts. If you play an easy ball and capitalize on it, smacking it into a precarious angle for your oppenent, doesn't that deserve accolades as well? I think so.
If you get pocket Aces, bet high and everyone folds.. well to bad for you. If you get the same hand, play cautiously and rake it in, 'nice hand'. When I say that in poker, I try to limit it to how they played their hand rather than their luck, but I've no doubt done it in the past, and no, it doesn't make sense - unless 'nice luck' is said instead.
Analogies aside, to praise someone for something they have no actually control over seems a bit pointless to me though it will continue to happen. One reason being perhaps, the happiness for another's good fortune.

What I find truly telling is that according to one poster on this thread (as evidenced by a flash anger rating to 'punish' me), I have no worth as a human being for yanking his chain. Apparently, he missed ALL of the hundreds of threads on being stuck in ego and taking offense.
And all of my contributions here in over 6 years have been made invalid because I pointed out the obvious and he decided to feel hurt.
Where is the progress?

Apology accepted. I just found stating the obvious to be humorous and redundant. I am not truly mean, just playful. I cannot help it (see: two hundred threads on 'free will').
As to your job situation, I find taking a really long walk (not off a short pier! ) is helpful when I have excess emotion and am trying to work things out. Don't return home until you feel at least somewhat balanced.
Not comparing me to you, but I have had the worst shit possible (short of dying) happen and I am still here.

The music is a total rip off of Madonna's "Material Girl".... Not that I would know that, but, just saying.....

So, you listen to Madonna, huh? I found the song extremely appropriate for the given situation though.

Hey now, back on topic....!
Yes, Madonna was dealt a nice, very hot hand.... But she also played that hand very well.....

Is is permissible to take a really long ride on a Segway instead? I just got one over the holidays and thought I should put it to good use.

A Segway is great, but I prefer a HoverRound as it is even lazier. Both are helpful if you want your legs to atrophy.

That's Nice! You probably say "Nice Shot" even when they hit the dying quail off the back wall. I can almost hear the sincerity.
I hope you at least wait until the point is over to begin clapping and heaping praise. Otherwise, distracting for your opponent and even worse for you trying to applaud while getting ready for the next shot.
