One thing that is fun to play around with is Key/gating. it soudns complex for beginners, but it is really simple.
I think most editing software has the capability to do this now.
its most common real world application is making drums sound deeper.
example: lets say that you want this kick drum to have an added 808, deep sub sound added to the bottom of it. so what you do is get whatever low tone (oscillator/synth) and make a track (live or pre recorded) with just that one tone over the length of the song. then you put a gate on it. A gate is just what it soudns like, it lets sounds through, or closes. Then what you do is make the kick drum track the "key" to open that gate.... and by setting the parameters just right (threshold, attack release) you can make taht 808 tone "open" only when the kick is hit, thus making it sound like it is part of the actual kick.
but it is really fun taking something like a speech and making an aphex track the "key", but muting the aphex track and just listen to the rhythm of an aphex beat set to someones speech.

Cubase SX3 won't let you do side-chaining unfortunately

thats because cubase anything suxxz0rs.
I would take DP and go completely MIDI than work with Cubase again..
I really wish that they would put some effort into an aesthetically pleasing GUI as well instead of looking like it was designed with Qbasic.
