So I'm thinking it might be easier to just serilize my straw log

...because I don't need to monitor any temperatures, necessarily, just into the PC for ~1.5 hours. There seems to be dispute on the necessity/importance of other microorganisms in the substrate, but I don't see any reason why sterilizing a straw log wouldn't work out well...
do you?

Straw does not need to be sterilised, just pasturised, i would imagine that sterilised straw would more likely contaminate that pasturised.

You can sterilize straw, but afterwards you need to KEEP it sterile or molds will colonize it before the mushroom mycelium can. That's the reason we pasteurize. RR

The straw will contaminate easier if you sterilize it. Pasteurization kills many molds, but also spares the ‘good bacteria’ which help the mycelium to naturally fruit better, as well as to help fight off contaminants.
