Cool mushroom facts

I thought they were anyways,
Found throughout the net,
There were no discovered fossils of fungi dating back more than 10,000 years until a scientist recently found a mushroom encased in tree resin (sap) that is at least 90 million years old! The mushroom is a member of the genus Cordyceps.
Some of the earliest commercial mushroom farms were actually set up in caves in France during the reign of King Louis XIV (1638-1715).
Some of the oldest living mushroom colonies are fairy rings growing around the famous Stonehenge ruins in England. The rings are so large that they can best be seen from airplanes or satellites.
Mushrooms are fungi. Fungi are as uniquely different from plants as plants are from animals. In fact, fungi and animals are now in the same super-kingdom, Opisthokonta.
One portabella mushroom has more potassium than a banana. White and crimini mushrooms are also good sources of potassium. Potassium helps the human body maintain normal heart rhythm, fluid balance, and muscle and nerve function.
Many mushrooms grow towards light, following the sun just like plant. Unlike with plants, scientists do not yet know how mushrooms use sunlight; only that they do.
The spores of mushrooms are made of chitin, the hardest naturally-made substance on Earth. Some scientists suspect that mushroom spores are capable of space travel; a few even believe that some fungi found on Earth originally came from outer space!
Fungi recycle plants after they die and transform them into rich soil. If not for mushrooms and fungi, the Earth would be buried in several feet of debris and life on the planet would soon disappear.
Grains and foods that come from animals are good sources of selenium. But in fresh produce, only mushrooms contain significant amounts of this mineral. Selenium plays an important role in the human immune system, the thyroid system, and the male reproductive system.
Some mushrooms produce compounds that fight cancer! This was discovered when scientists in Japan found that a community had unusually low cancer rates. The scientists discovered that the members of the community grew and ate many Enokitake mushrooms!
Mushrooms are an excellent source of copper, a mineral that the body needs to produce red blood cells and for other functions. ~ Mushrooms have significant amounts of three B-complex vitamins: riboflavin (rye-bo-FLAY-vin), niacin (NYE-eh-sin), and pantothenic (pan-toe-THIN-ick) acid. The B vitamins help release energy from the fat, protein, and carbohydrates in food.
You can make beautiful colors by boiling wild mushrooms and dipping cloth in the resulting broth. The books Mushrooms For Color and The Rainbow Beneath My Feet tell you how to make dyes with mushrooms
Consumption of mushrooms in the United States increased from 3.7 pounds per person in 1993 to 4.2 pounds per person in 2000.
Sales of the 2001-2002 U.S. mushroom crop totaled 851 million pounds, and consumers spent $912 million on them.
The largest living organism ever found is a honey mushroom, Armillaria ostoyae. It covers 3.4 square miles of land in the Blue Mountains of eastern Oregon, and it's still growing
Total fresh mushroom shipments reported for September 2007 exceeded 60 million pounds, nearly catching the September 2004 record level. Only two months this year have not exceeded 60 million pounds; again, on track with the 2004 record performance. Total shipments year to date are up 2.4%.
Mushrooms are useful not only as food and medicine; some are also being used in bioremediation, to absorb and digest dangerous substances like oil, pesticides and industrial waste, in places where they threaten the environment.
Thats all for now. I hope someone found something interesting.

I kinda got chills from reading that. If that's true, then maybe there's a whole lot more truth to some of the more visual strains of Psilocybes. That's a really interesting though right there!

This sweater was colored completely with dye made from mushrooms.

Here is the link if you want to read more about how to dye with mushrooms.
