Question about pressure cookers?
    #7825517 - 01/02/08 09:28 PM (16 years, 30 days ago)

Hey, this is my first attempt at cultivation, and i was wondering if i need to put water into the pressure cooker during sterilization. If so, how much?

And one more question. Since when you boil the jars, the water is only supposed to go up to about an inch from the top...wont the water in the pressure cooker go all over the jars potentially fucking something upp?

Holy Fuck. Stop now. Throw away all your grow materials before you kill yourself.

You need to take a step back and read A LOT MORE about what you are doing and why you are doing it. Using a pressure cooker improperly is very dangerous.

Edited to reflect reality.

Put 1/2" - 1" of distilled water at the bottom of your PC. The idea is that you are not boiling things in water but rather cooking them in a high temp steam bath. So you want all the water in the PC to turn to steam. This is why you must use distilled water. Anything dissolved in the water you put in the PC will be forced out of solution when the water is all transformed to steam. This stuff (salts mostly) will all adhere to inside of your PC and the pressure release values in the PC. Most of this stuff will not easily go back into solution and you will get a crust on everything. If this crust becomes thick enough on your pressure release values they will stop working. Then your PC may explode sending searing hot chunks of metal all about.

Most PCs come with instructions... Where did you get this one? Be sure it is in good working order for the reason stated above.

i have read up a lot about everything, have it almost down to a science. Thing is, i was originally planning on boiling the jars but then today i found a pressure cooker lying around my house, so i don't know much about them. Am i better off just boiling?

Second question, can i stack the jars inside of the cooker? about 2 or 3 high? That question kind of goes along with my question about water getting inside of the jars. Thanks in advance for any info.

I would try to see if you can obtain the manual for the PC before attempting to operate it. For fucks sake, if you didn't know you needed to put water in one, you DEFINITELY shouldn't be operating one. Remember, a PRESSURE cooker is under PRESSURE. It can become a bomb when used incorrectly. I pray for you brother.

Edited to add: No, you don't have this down to a science when you have never done it and you're asking questions like this.

I hear ya'. Just don't go blowing your kitchen and possibly your head up for the sake of making a couple PF jars. I wasn't kidding about the manual. Try to find one online.

Actually it isnt dangerous at all. What is dangerous is using it with water. use at least an inch of water until you get the hang of it. Any less water and you are risking a meltdown.

I don't see a response as to if boiling is effective enough to use instead of a pc. I'm doing pre-grow research and trying to find out whether a dropping 50 bones on a pc is needed.

I'm sure it depends on the substr8 used. I plan on using BRF and perhaps Rye grain.

Any help appreciated, Thanks!

You should be fine just boiling the BRF cakes but if you start using grains you need the PC.

If your using the pf tek with brown rice flour, boiling is fine.

If you use rye flour with the pf tek, you will need a pressure cooker.

And for using any grains (rye grain, wbs, popcorn, etc) you need a pressure cooker.

Try and find the manual for the pressure cooker. Most simple pressure cookers have a weight on the top that once the cooker is upto pressure while start bobbing and releasing pressure, reduce the heat so that the weight is rocking gently and venting not to much steam.

The manual (if you can find one) will tell you how many mls of water to use per 15 minutes of cooking. For example, if I pc my jars for an hour I am required to use 625ml (ordinary tap) water. Put somthing in the bottom of the pc to prevent jars from touching the bottom as they WILL crack. Most are supplied with a "trivet" rack. Once you have pc 'd the jars for an hour, remove from heat and DO NOT open the pc for at least 12hours, even if it feels cool to touch sooner. If you open it too soon it will crack the jars also.

I would like to clarify something that was written here: DO NOT let your pc go dry. NO NO NO.

But if there are a couple of inches of water in the bottom chances are it won't.

I was initially terrified about using a pc. I've heard such stories! But it's not that bad.
