Has anyone every tried adding sterilized flax seed or ground flax seed to their casing for added nutrition? I know people have use it for their substrate.

i've never heard of that. i thought the casing layer was meant to be for moisture and not nutrition anyway. please don't quote me on that.

Quoted. He's right. While many let the substrate colonize the casing prior to starting fruiting, you don't want to let that happen too much. Adding flax to your casing is not a good idea, because you want your casing to act first and foremost as a moisture reservoir, and allowing the substrate to colonize it too much will reduce its ability to effectively hold water. This is the same reason that the use of coco coir as a casing is no longer seen as very desirable.

You really don't want nutrients in your casing layer as casing layer is for moisture control and a layer of protection from contamination....you can use coco coir as a casing layer but it's not ideal to as easy contamination...if you choose to do so you'd better be on top of your game and watch it very carefully.

I also heard from someone else what you say about coco coir as a casing. Why is it not smart to use? thanks for the info =)

Because your sub may over-colonize it, restricting its ability to hold water. And, as it is nutritious, contaminates may also like to colonize it. Use 50/50 peat/verm.

Bacteria grows off nutrients....bacteria/contamination will grow way faster then your mycelium will grow...bacteria needs nutrients to grow therefor anything with nutrients as a casing is not a good idea(my statement could be put together better)

awesome thanks for the info! Just thought adding nutrition would make the mushrooms go bigger/larger flush by adding nutrition.
