a little idealistic...don't you think?

not trying to be negative at all :wink:  just that cursing the darkness is quite alright.

Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.

What exactly do you mean by "darkness".....?

If you are talking about the darkness/brightness in a lighting sense, do you really curse at it.....?
I don't think I have ever done that before..................    :shiftyeyes:

I should think that the candle would be a curse to the darkness...it was there first.

It's about as all right as punching yourself in the balls.  I don't see what's idealistic about lighting the proverbial candle.  It's just logical.  Lamentation doesn't help anything; it's just a bad habit.

Lamentation doesn't help anything;

Nothing is all bad or good. If your beloved doggie dies a short period of lamentation helps one move on and seems quite healthy.

I would generally agree with you, only that you have to consider the context in which it was being said.
He we replying to a pessimist state of mind which sounded like a life lesson rather than a natural (and passenger) feeling of sadness.

You're right of course. All states of mind can have value for humans. All learning is the result of failure.

I'm sure you know the real meaning of the candle saying: If you have a problem, seek to overcome it rather than curse the fact that there is a problem.

In the case of a death in the family, grieving probably is a logical course of action for most. Lamentation and suffering is a part of grieving for most humans because of our overwhelming tendency to become attached to things. The idea of nonattachment and its value is not a new one to this group, but it sure is difficult to achieve.

It is definitely normal to react with resentment, and I think that's why it seems healthy. Is it healthy? Depends what you compare it to. How much time would the Buddha spend cursing the passing of his dog? There are better ways of dealing with adversity, but most of us don't know how to do it very well.

True. The full state of acceptance of death would dispense with the grieving process entirely and would, IMO, be extremely healthy and rare.

I'm talking about emotional and physical learning. To learn from a book is a different matter and you are quite correct.
