anyone else here code for a living?
    #7824166 - 01/02/08 03:33 PM (16 years, 30 days ago)

I fucking hate it.. I'm 28.. beeing doing internships through high school and college for perl and moved into VB/ASP.NET when I got into the real world.

2 more years and I'm going to flip the fuck out. I can't take any more programming.

I'm working freelance right now on a startup that I pray takes off. If it does, in 2 years I won't ever have to touch another line of code again. I'm taking the money and starting a bar.

If I fail... I'll go back to the real world looking for a job.. something as FAR from programming as humanly possible... I need a blue collar job.

* Fuckshit breaking because 1 made a tiny ass typo somewhere in 50,000 lines of code

* Fuck having people come to me expecting that I can teach their retarded asses how to do stuff with their printers, or figure out why their serial number for something isn't working, or why the INNURNET is slow just because "Hey.. You're an IT guy".

* Fuck people coming to me for their email problems even though I just write the damn web site code

* Fuck bosses who don't understand why something is not PHYSICALLY POSSIBLE like how they want a report that shows statistics for events that HAVEN'T EVEN FUCKING HAPPENED YET and who think that you're not a good programmer because THEY can't comprehend why they want something that would defy the laws of physics

* Fuck everyone who can't get together and make their god damn browsers treat CSS the same way.

* Fuck bosses who hire contractors that write crappy code and then get pissed off at ME when it breaks.

:rofl2:

Been there... moved here...

* Fuck bosses that don't understand how a little tiny feature change will undo three months of work and add an extra six months to the launch date, demand the irrelevant changes be made and then blame the programmers when the launch date is missed by six months.  "...it shouldn't be too hard to switch from PHP to Java, should it?  The guys in marketing think Java sounds better than PHP, so make the change.  Oh, and remember how we decided it would be best if you removed all the template code.  Turns out that we probably shouldn't have done that.  Can you go ahead and make the system work with templates again?  Better make sure it works in both the Java and the PHP versions, just in case."

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt...

I coded for 21 years. Back in school again with people young enough to be my children.

Find something you'll enjoy doing. Don't worry about what it pays - the money is a *lot* less important than a job you like.

Happy mushrooming!

You could be shoveling shit or digging a ditch dude, sitting in a chair and typing is a pretty good deal, really.

I currently do web design/development for a small 5 person company and am happy with that. I do not think about work outside of work time. I am not stressed, or resentful to my employer. So I guess things with work are going ok.

Opening a bar doesn't sound any easier than coding either, have you thought that one through all the way?

I would at least get some sort of satisfaction out of menial physical labor. Coding doesn't do anything for me as far as satisfaction... just gives me headaches and frustration. If Shoveling SHIT paid as well as programming.. I'd be shovelling shit... hands down.

Managing a bar may be stressful, but at least I'd be in a business that's fun.... that I could sit back on a not-so-crazy night in the corner, light up a cigar and look around and think "all this is mine... this shit is run the way I want it to, I get to book the bands *I* like, serve the food *I* like, etc

It sounds like you hate programming. Why did you start in the first place?

I think you problem is VB/ASP.NET. Its shit. The entire MS platform is boring shit. Get back to the Perl. Its a joy to code in. Also web development is boring, In my opinion. Just try to mix it up a bit.

As for the mortgage and car payment; you'll get no pity from me for that. You have been trapped in the rat race by yourself. I would suggest you get rid of your house, or get one you can afford. And sell your car and get something used. Then you will have more freedom to see what you want to do in life.

I got pressured into college before I knew what the fuck I wanted to do. By the time I realized I wanted to be an artist, I already had 3 years down so I just finished with Info Sys management. I could live as a starving artist and be happy... but I'm too entreprenuereal (sp?) as a programmer and I'd rather go hardcore as hard as I can and make as much money so I can run any kind of business I want. When it comes to art... I can't do it as a business.. it's just not in me.

And I'm not looking for any pity on the mortgage... just explaining why I'm stuck in the position I'm at now.

Like I said.. it's all or nothing right now.. I'm throwing all my eggs in 1 basket right now, putting everything I have into this new company I'm a partner in and pray it takes off... if it does I'll have the money to take a long LONG break and then get back into work doing anything I want and going back to school...

Ahaha! I've sooo been there done that.

I finally got out but instead of opening a bar, I bought and airplane and retired! Of course, I knew better than to put a ball and chain (read: wife and kids = mortgage and car) around MY leg! Especially when an occasional booty call has the same effect without the drawbacks. :yesnod:

Now all I have to deal with is the old people on the condo board. They're almost as bad as IT managers, but at least I don't have to go to them for a paycheck.

when I entered college as a computer science major I realized I was going to hate all the sitting around I have fuckin ADD.  but anyways the people whom I didn't really c are for in my computer classes were going to be my coworkers rest my life I realized, I freaked the fuck out got the hell out since I couldn't sit still anyways.

now I dig ditches professionally and I enjoy it greatly.  i get to talk dirty with some of my best friends all day we smoke profuse amounts of pot to make the labors go by, I don't have to go home and work out or worry about my cardio, or even what's on my dinner plate.  plus construction equipment for hands on fun blows computers away.

the only one up side is are there good looking woman where you work?  because far and in between in the construction field

Spending too much time programming makes my mind work robotically.

Fortunately, so far I've been able to balance programming with other things like graphic design, 3D modeling, template design, video editing, etc.

I like doing that - working across multiple platforms.

I'm working on finding my first actual career job now and I know I'm going to have to pay my dues, but if I get stuck being a programmer I'll probably just move to the Redwood Forest National Park and become a park ranger
