so, i have a pretty damned noisy pc. i'd probably say it goes my video card (8800gt)>power suppy>cpu fan in terms of what's creating the most noise. i'm not sure what i could do about the video card, any ideas? also, could anyone recommend a good power supply and heatsink/fan for my pc that will give it reliable power and keep it cool but isn't so fuckin' loud? the power supply would need pci-e connectors and the fan would be for a socket 775 motherboard (have a q6600 on this processor on this pc). any other ideas? i've seen things like case insulation that allegedly doesn't raise the temp of your pc too much but i'm a little skeptical. any help would be appreciated. peace, cj

If its a desktop, the case fans can be really loud. I've had success switching them for "quiter ones" I believe these fail more often though

i'm not sure how much noise my back fan is contributing but i don't think much, would def. consider swapping it too.

As far as power supplies are concerned, I'd go for a seasonic. The stock cooler on my GPU is very quiet (software says it's set to 60%, I have set it to 100% and it does get noisy). It's nvida's own 8800GTX, so similar to yours.
The noisiest component on my case is the thermaltake exhaust fan, but not loud enough to stop me sleeping.
I'd reccomend zalman as well for quiet cpu cooling
http://www.quietpc.com/gb-en-gbp/products is a good place to get ideas of what's available.

btw I don't have any case fans. I don't think they are necessary especially with core2duo etc unless you are doing serious overclocking or live in death valley.

You really should have at least one case fan (at the back pref.), those C2Ds can get pretty hot. If not for the CPU, then the general health of the entire system.

You need to determine the noise source first.
My whole case started resonating once and I could feel the same vibration in every part of my computer. That vibration made the most noise and I removed one of the 3 hard-disks one by one and found that they caused the resonance. One hd is now on a damper(some textile) and it's quite again.
