The way BRF Cakes Should Look pics

I decided to make some cakes after watching RR vid on growing oyster via brf cakes. I havent made a cake in years but i wanted to make one to show how easy it is. These cakes will be used for oyster and shiitake. I do not plan to fruit shiitake off of a cake. The formula is 2 parts verm, 1 part water, 1 part flour. ITs a good ratio and easy to remember.
This is the way they should look after pcing. They should look no different from when you packed them. If you pack too tight or water gets in during cooking then the nooks and crannies are lost. It becomes a lump of shit and the mycelium has a hard time growing throughout the cake. With the proper compaction the mycelium will form rhizomorphs that can cross good distances to reach more substrate. There is a vermiculite layer on top. More is better. I usually fill the jar with substrate to 1/4th inch from the top then compact back down a 1/4th inch. This leaves 1/2 for the verm layer. The glass ridge on the outside of the jar is a good spot to use. Wipe down the sides. This is really important! Pack the verm layer so it is just above the top of the jar, about 1mm above. You should feel just the slightest resistance from the lid going on. Once on shake the jar. If you can hear/see the verm layer moving around then add more.

The bottom after pc'ing. This is where the signs of too much water will show after cooking. This cake is great!!

I also made up some rye flour cakes since I ran out of brf and wally had this for sale. This is my first time using rye for a cake. It is stickier. I used the same ratio as above. This ratio works great. Whether or not it is the perfect ratio I do not know. But it works fine. I left some big gaps in it just to show it can be done and isnt harmful. less substrate=less mushrooms. You cant big deal it.

Here they are together. Little one is the brf and the big is the rye.

I like the medium sized verm. Small verm is too tight.
That is the same rye. It should be fine.

I tried the verm that size once and didn't like the texture of the cake. Now I use what I call medium-fine grade, not as big as yours but not as fine as this poor guy has got. The chunks are about the size of a grain of rice.
But yeah, the really fine stuff is way to compact.

Nice right up, thats what my cakes look like now that i have the moisture content down, i just made up 2 pf teks 2day to test out 2 lcs i had forgot about and thats how the mix looked.
I have explained several times how the mix should look, but never thought of showing pictures.
Nice, i too use slightly larger verm and it seems to work good for me, ihave never had a stalled from a substrate that looks like that.

they were pc'ed for 30 mins at 15psi. usually I only cook them for 20 mins for brf but rye seems dirtier then brf so i added ten mins. Still there was no dry/burnt looking brf

medium coarse vermiculite and organic rye flour would be my favorite cake mix.
