This is just fucked right up

I was out for lunch with a friend, and he had tossed his gloves and keys on the table. I noticed that one of his keys looked incredibly familiar... it was the same color, shape and brand of my own apartment key. Even the little bumps looked familiar. In fact I was sure it was mine. He said it was the key to his deadbolt at the house he is renting.
I pulled out my keys and we compared. They appeared to be cut exactly the same. When we got to my place, he tried his key in my front door and it opened it! I always assumed those kinds of locks were unique, I guess I was naive.
So there are identical locks out there, with interchangeable keys... ok, but what are the odds that my best friend would happen to have the exact same one? Is it a huge fluke or are there thousands of identical locks? How many other people have been arbitrarily given access to my home?
Would you be concerned about this?

My house key was able to start an old coworker's car. The chances are pretty slim though it's still definitely possible. Is it a Schlage by any chance?

Maybe he had a copy of your key.
Most tumbler locks have 5 pins, and each pin has at least 6 lengths it can be set at. Its inevitable that eventually there would be another one.

Change your locks to something you can set yourself.
My friend has a combination that requires numbers rather than keys. Very nice.

Nah my spare set is at my parents' place, and he's not one to sneak around just to play a joke on me.
I guess there are a finite number of combinations for tumbler locks... it's just disturbing that anyone out there could potentially unlock my door.

shit they could sit there and fuck with a lock..
or they could just break your fuckin window..
there are lots of people out there that can pick your lock too i'm sure..
you have to trust humanity a little bit
that is wild that you have the same key, though. i've always wondered how they make each key unique..
yours probably is unique in some way, but the other one just happens to work..

Yeah if someone wants to unlock their door they will get a set of lockpicks instead of hoping that their key is gonna work on your door.

obviously see if your key opens the lock of whatever he said his was a key to if it does he is honest if not. Ask why he stole and duplicated your key? Is this a friend or someone robbing your stuff for crack money?

When I was a kid, my mom locked herself out of her car at church.
Oddly enough... one other churchgoer had a key almost exactly similar and was able to open OUR car with HIS key.
It happens.

You need to ask yourself: can I REALLY trust this person? Have you had some in the past wondering whether he is who he seems to be? If you ever had odd seemingly out of place suspicions about him, this is the time to think hard.
Have objects in your home gone missing or seemed oddly displaced? Have you lost a spare key once? Can you account for your spares?
There are 7776 different variations in the average key model. It's either a huge coincidence or it isn't.
What I'm saying is there is a chance greater than 1:7776 that your friend pocketed one of your spares or something along those lines.
Don't get overly paranoid though.
There is also the possibility that you have an inferior lock. Some relatively cheap locks come with only 10 variations or so.
Just to be sure I'd say get yourself a new lock.
It's best to not buy a bearded key, those things are super-easy to open clandestinely. really, super easy.
Your best bet is either those flat keys with indentations, an electronic key and a number code. Number code locks are the best because you can someone "give someone the key" over the phone (useful in 911 situations), and then later reset the code.

Try your key in his deadbolt;
If it fits then you have a trustworthy friend. If it doesn't then he has clearly stole your key.

That does away with the paranoia factor.
"It just weirds me out." should be enough justification for him to let you try it.

One of my coworkers drove home the wrong car one night due to this. Same model and color car as someone else's, it's quite a coincidence but it happens.

In my mind there is no possibility he stole my key. He is a remarkably honest person; he just doesn't do things like that. Besides he's the one that suggested we try it in my lock.
I am almost tempted to try my key in a neighbor's door.

It's nothing unusual. Some locks are commonly made available keyed alike in large quantities. I've seen sitting on the store shelf locks that came in display cartons of 10 designed for each lock to be sold separately. One box had uniquely keyed locks and the other box of 10 right beside it were all made keyed alike. There are a lot of applications where someone will want to lock multiple doors but only have to use one key for all. They shouldn't be used on your residence door imo but most likely was simply a case of a construction contractor not paying attention to which key type they bought at the building supply.

I'm not saying he did, just that it's up to you to assess whether this could be the case.
Might be a shitty brand lock much sooner than a 7776:1 coincidence.
If he does nick stuff, fuck him up with Occam's razor
