wood in lab
    #7820688 - 01/01/08 04:40 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

ok so im building a sterile lab inside of a room.
my question is what material (Plywood like type) something cheap, should i use for my walls?

dont forget that the walls will also be painted with high gloss white enamel, and covered with a heavy duty clear plastic for easy cleaning.

thanks

Why use wood for walls if you're just going to line it with plastic? Cant you make a frame out of something (wood, pvc) then wrap that in plastic???

ive tryed that 2wice now and ive had very poor results and also it is harder to clean because when you wipe down the plastic it gives in.

also try with tarps and im sick of building one of these evey 2 months after it falls apart

this room that i am builing will be a permenent room sealed tight and easy to clean and also attached to an antechamber \
ill upload my blueprints

Anyway you go about it plywood is not cheap what so ever. Especially when you need enough to build a little room. Why can't you build a more sturdy frame and cover with plastic, instead of scrubbing the walls just spray them with bleach or rubbing alcohol. Better yet if you have a room to build a "room" in why not just line the walls with plastic lol then you have a bigger room and the plastic won't give. It will be ALOT cheaper.

Drywall is cheaper than plywood from what I remember, but I haven't shopped for either in quite some time. I would go to the hardware store and ask someone what they think.

Why not just cover the walls of the room (that you want to build a mini room in) with plastic. Same thing but less than half the cost. Also how does painting the plywood with white paint make it easier to clean ?

Mold resistance will depend on the paint. I would use a semi to high gloss latex paint. You can also use a good primer like Killz, which has great mold resistance.

drywall is clean enough as long as you keep it dry. For a lab it is fine. Just paint it with a high gloss paint.

Green board which is drywall but with green paper is more water resistant. But then again this is for a lab, which should be dry.
Drywall is fine, it is cheaper than wood

The color of the paint wouldn't make a difference, but painting the wood/drywall is definitely a MUST.

I would use sheetrock or greenboard. That's your best bet for the money and will take paint well.

It's best to paint things white because you can more easily see any dirt that needs to be cleaned up. I would also have your paint store mix in some fungicide into the paint.

I would recommend skipping the plastic. What ends up happening is that the plastic traps moisture between it and the wall, then you get mold and mildew growing there where you can't sterilize it or clean it off without tearing down your plastic. Just paint your walls well and skip the plastic.

You're not looking at a cheap project. Between the drywall and the 2x4's for framing it's not going to be cheap. GL

Just a question. I'm curious to know why you want to build this room? Why not just get a nice table and some good kit and use a glovebox for any procedures that require sterility.

It will save you all the hasstle and you will have to use a glovebox anyways even if you do make up the room.

He probably wants some sort of clean room or just wants his lab to be ultra clean. It's not a bad idea. A good cleanroom is almost like walking around inside a flow hood.

Maybe he has plans to do more serious research than just growing PF cakes, or maybe he's planning a big bulk grow. If you take a clean room and put in some deep shelves every couple feet or so all the way around you end up with a kick ass FC big enough to walk around in and enough shelf space to hold scores of trays.
