Okay im new to shrooms..but Im completely obsessed with it for some reason...never eaten any shrooms before..but Im being drawn in..crazy
Anyways i found these two shrooms at a friends house in a mulch bed...didn't see any bruising but the caps fade very quickly when picked except for a dark edge around the cap Also very distinct from the other mushrooms that are all over the pine straw covered front yard..same color pattern on the cap..but less distinct..
Cap - about quarter size..smell like regular mushrooms... Spore print - well all i had to do one was a napkin for a couple hours..looks jet black..put the cap on glass to try and collect the rest of the spores for a better print

well if the spore print is indeed pure black, then it is ok to eat.
Sounds like pannaeolus subbalteatus due to the cap size and spore print, but we need more specifics.
tell us as many things as possible. Location, color, weather over the past few days, and anything else that could help us out.

Being in cattle country doesn't matter. It's what the mushrooms are actually growing out of that matters. Panaeolus subbalteatus rarely grows out of woodchips. Do they look like these? Do the stems appear reddish when held at an angle. Are there white fibrils on the stem. http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd195/landsnorkle/PC160839.jpg http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd195/landsnorkle/PC160815.jpg http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd195/landsnorkle/PC160009.jpg Or do they look like these, more delicate, hairy cap, light veil remnants on stem. http://www.ilmyco.gen.chicago.il.us/Taxa/Images/Unknopored212.JPG http://www.mushroomexpert.com/images/nadon/nadon_psathyrella_velutina_02.jpg

no veil remnants..kinda whitish close to the cap..didnt see any strands..the cap wasnt fuzzy..kinda chestnut colored in the middle of the stem..lighter everywhere else..especially where attached to the cap....actually smooth and slippery when wet..theres all kinds of clutter in the mulch like leaves and some pine needles

Sorry, I overlooked the fact that it was on mulch.
I haven't a guess as to what you have there.
black spored, viscid quarter-sized mushroom, with debri on it.

No, foes don't grow in wood chips and leave a dark walnut brown print.
You probably have a Tubaria or deadly Galerina.
Either way, it is not active or edible.

Ok, lets call it dark purple brown.
That means that your mushroom is either in Stropharia, Hypholoma, Psilocybe or Psathyrella.
Put those four names into google images and see if you can come up with something that looks like your mushroom.

No, that isn't it. Psilocybe pelliculosa only grows in the pacific northwest.
If it looks like that and has dark purple brown spores, you have found a Psathyrella.
Here is the best web page I have seen on Psathyrella:

That list is mostly maintained by me. I don't see any inaccuracies regarding P. pelliculosa, it doesn't claim that they grow in Georgia.

Which guide is that?

I fixed the error in that document. Thanks for noticing!
> i looked into the Psathyrella but couldnt find anything close
There are a few hundred species of Psathyrella.
> what about a strain of p mexicana (atlantis)
Psilocybe atlantis is not a strain of P. mexicana, though it is in the Mexicanae section along with P. mexicana.
The mushrooms in Psilocybe section Mexicanae grow in grass, and are unlikely to be found in a mulch bed.
I recommend you borrow a camera and post some pictures of the mushrooms in question.
