dormant mycelium
    #7819787 - 01/01/08 11:46 AM (16 years, 1 month ago)

I've never had success in growing mushrooms yet, but my 3rd attempt was the closest. I inoculated two quart sized pre-sterilized rye grain jars back in july. The mycelium grew in one of them but not the other. However, it grew about halfway up the jar and then stopped. It went dormant or something. so my question is, can i re-inoculate the jar that didn't grow any mycelium? its really old, but theres no contamination.

So basically you have failed three grows using vendor prepared substrates?

There is something very wrong here, all you have to do is inoculate and you still got it wrong? This is bad, very bad.

What is your inoculation procedure? are you incubating?

You really really don't need to buy the mycrodome. You will probably be pissed because it won't raise your level of success if your messing up during inoculation.

I agree with DontPlay. Buying new toys won't help. You need to focus on how you're doing things, not what you're doing them with. You're messing up something very basic, and the Mycodome isn't magic. Unless you change the way you are inoculating your jars you will just fail again. Be more careful.

Do it yourself. Why are you paying for presterilized jars? Making PF jars is as easy as it gets and you don't even need a pressure cooker. Mycodome? I can sell you a covered bucket with an airpump for $50+ if you want. Perlite in an enclosed container is all you need. This was my very first setup:

It was a 10 gallon aquarium with wet perlite and a plastic garbage bag for a lid. I hand fanned 3 times a day. Humidity was (obviously) near 100%.

It wasn't a bulk grow, but I was happy with the results:

The mycelium did grow after I inoculated the jar. It was perfectly healthy looking, but it just stopped growing. Pre-sterilized jars just never seem to work completely. Either they get contaminated or the moisture content is off. I want to prepare my own substrates, but how do i do that without a pressure cooker? Do I use an oven? A microwave?

the results you got from the aquarium look great to me. Did you incubate your jars in that as well?

BTW thankyou everyone for the advice

The pf tek can be sterilised in a pot of boiling water for 90 minutes. Keep the jars of the bottom of the pot with spare jar lids, perlite, pebbles, crumpled up tinfoil etc this will stop the substrate heating up to much at the bottom of the jar and burning.

Fill the pot up about a few inches up the bottom of the jar, get it to a steady boil with the lid on and time it from when it starts to boil.

I find it helps to weight down the lid with something to keep the steam from escaping.

Incubation is not really required, room temperature is fine.
If you get the heat right, u can keep it right at boiling and not boil it dry.

PFTek does not require a PC.
