No more reefer

Has anyone had to stop smoking pot because of anxiety? I had my first anxiety attack after smoking a bowl about 6 weeks ago, scared me off the ganja completely. I was a fairly frequent smoker too - a couple of times a week at least.
Has anyone else had a similar experience where you couldn't go near pot for fear of having an anxiety attack or going insane? I really miss smoking up, and I often wonder if an extended break from MJ will fix me so I can eventually get high again.
Your thoughts?

the same exact shit happen to me and i was a frequent smoker from the tender age of 15 up until last year, I'm 24 now. i use to smoke all day everyday, and most of the time its was the best of the best. in our area anyway. now when i smoke i get bad anxiety and i guess going crazy would be the word. I'm curious to hear from some one who had the same shit but then went back to smoking with no problems. are we fucked for life of will all of this pass? its been a little over a year since the last time i smoked.

no way dude i always smoke to relieve anxiety. funny how contrasting the effects can be from person to person. ive read that a side effect of thc is increased heart rate but ive often smoked to calm my heart down.

Did you ever consider the possibility that the cause of these anxiety or panic attacks may be directly influenced by how high you get?
Keep in mind how strong the strains of weed are these days, up to 7-13% THC?? One bowl could be too much for you, I have a friend of mine who only can take a few hits because he'll be floored but just enough to avoid freaking out.
Try just smoking less at one time, or like smoke a bowl slowly like as you watch a movie or lay in bed, thats my favorite.

Yep I gave up weed over 3 months ago because of the same thing. Weed was triggering feelings I had from recent bad trips and causing some bad anxiety and paranoia.

I'm the same way if I smoke alone, I'll only be able to take 1 or 2 hits without buggin. When I'm with other poeple its no problem. Its just that weed is a drug that causes you to get lost in your thoughts, and if your alone its gonna get magnified.

good sativa gives me anxiety, i like it tho.
I have bad experiences with pot/alcohol tho...
both times= i drank a couple(2, i do mean a couple for real) then smoked dank skunk.....get pale, sweaty, heartbeat hard, stress, puke-- felt like an OD on alcohol, but dint last but like an hour...
a freind had the same thing happen (no alcohol), but from diff weed (still dank tho)...he puked, heart pound, thought he mite die and never smoked weed with me since...he's a 25+ yrs freind, i grew up with.
I've been smokin drinkin like 20 yrs, idk if alcohol was involved with you, but since then---i smoke first then drink, no i'll effects since...its the booze beer first, then smoke that gets me.

I had a phase during which smoking any amount of weed would make me really paranoid. Don't stress about it- it's not permanent. I stopped for a few weeks, started smoking again, and have been fine ever since.

I think its also majorly impacted by your mental state at the time. For example, say one time you smoke, you get rediculously mindblowing high, and you kinda wigg out and have some racing heart issues, maybe paranoia, etc. So then the next day you're getting ready to smoke and you think back to the day before and you're like "Oh shit, I hope I don't get anxiety attacks again" and you smoke with that tiny bit of fear, or anxiety, that it might happen again. Chances are, in that mindset you'll be focused on what you're feeling, how your body feels, different sensations, and it might cause you to wigg out again.
Its kind of like a mushroom trip, just like a trip, highs can be influenced on location and setting, or mindset.
Good luck buddy, don't give up on the great herb yet, maybe try some alternatives such as baking it into cookies/brownies because I've noticed that eating weed is a completely different high than smoking it. Its longer, more body-sensations, a more relaxed couchlocked high which is great for when you can't smoke.
If all else fails, drink some brewskis!

Great idea giving it up for a while. Get a different perspective on things, reorganize your priority's. Save the money you might spend otherwise on other things. It will give you a better appreciation on reefer if and when you should pick it up again. When getting high becomes a common mundane thing it loses its fascination and appeal that once drew you to it to begin with.

Yeah. I already switched to hash because weed makes me paranoid, but I just can't stand any drugs that up my heartbeat. I'll spend half the time checking my pulse. I've had two bad trips on weed (not all that bad, really - I didn't panic, just waited it out) and I tend to get panic attacks sometimes (though not related to drugs; I've had one on alcohol, but I'm sure it was unrelated), and I just can't seem to relax properly when I'm stoned. It always makes me shiver, too.

Clearly the honeymoon with MJ is over and now the real work needs to be done.
I used to get alot of anxiety and thoughts/feelings of sadness/depression used to take me over like crazy. I quit for a little while then just started taking 1 deep hit per week and meditate. This way I am able to be aware of my anxieties and address them instead of feeling trapped by them.

Ive had them before, as Ive had parts of trips that were bad. Doesnt keep me from doing them, it just sort of happens. I'm guessing if it was bad enough it could, but once I had this weird pain in my chest and thought my heart was going to explode and that I was literally going to die. Smoked the next day though

Yeah I agree. First few times I smoked with a close friend of mine and I enjoyed it and had good experiences. But for a year or so after the first time I smoked with my group of friends I would always get nervous and my heart would race. I was getting paranoid because we were doing it at a park and I was worried about cops and all that. Ever since then I had major paranoia and felt self-conscious every time I smoked. Then I took a month or so break because I didn't like its affects and wanting to focus on getting in shape. Then I decided to bake some firecrackers and hopefully chill. My thinking was since my mind couldn't focus on the act of smoking and basically prepare myself for being scared I might be ok. Turns out I was wrong, and had the worst case of paranoia I've had yet. I basically laid in my bed for a couple hours with my heart racing trying to go to sleep. For some reason, ever since then when I have smoked I have enjoyed it and felt calm and relaxed on it. I don't know if eating it blew my minds barriers so much that smoking doesn't mess with me or what.
My advice to the OP is to not focus on it and just forget about it ever happening.

You're not alone.
I figured out 50% of the problem was getting TOO stoned (switched from bongs to joints now), the other 50% was being alone/getting stuck in my own thoughts.
So now I pretty much only smoke joints down at the beach before going kitesurfing... it's WIN / WIN.

thats interesting. I don't really smoke anymore unless I drink then smoke. I tried smoking then drinking the other day, and it was ok, a lot more anxiety for me than drinking then smoking, but the weed part felt a lot more intense after drinking.
its weird though because we are opposite, I'm calmer when I drink then smoke, and you are when you smoke then drink. I wonder why.
The way I do it, I feel like im calming myself down, then smoking and the anxiety is sort of restrained by the alcohol. But if I smoke first the anxiety is there right away, and when I drink it lessens it, but the weed feeling is still intense so it doesnt work as well for me.
