How hard is it to drive?

I think I'm retarded, because driving seems like a herculean task for me.
Did anyone here have super freak outs? Massive anxiety? I don't GET driving. Maybe I'm just being a sissy and have to man up?
Anyone can share god-awful learning experiences?

Just relax and its easy.
After a while it becomes automatic, you don't even have to think about it.

I was never "freaked out" by driving but it didn't interest me much either.
I waited till I was 18 so I wouldn't have to get a permit then I waited another year to actually get my license.

From a school.
I know what you mean though. I had "freak outs" as you put it.
But they go away as you get used to it.
I started to suffer from road hypnosis. Its where u drive miles without remembering it, u suddenly become aware yet you don't remember half the jouney! When I became aware all of a sudden, I would start to wobble all over the road!

What the hell?
I don't see how adults can be afraid of cars. Didn't your parents bother to teach you how to drive? I got my learner's permit when I was 14 years old so I could drive back and forth to school. I was driving the harvester out in the field when I was 12. Granted, I never did any city driving until I was 18, but it only takes a few months or so to get used to the traffic.
Man up, driving is easy!

Bah, driving's a piece of piss. You just gotta get used to it, muscle memory and whatnot. I tensed up when I first started too, I remember my drivers ed instructor had to use the chicken brake a couple of times.

My ex girlffriend used to freak out on the road sometimes. she was crazy I remember one time she just stopped in the middle of the highway and cried, then made me switch seats with her and start driving, lol.
Your fears are actually pretty grounded though, driving is an insanely dangerous activity, relatively, so don't feel too bad. Just jam out to some good tunes and relax though, it'll become like second nature in no time.
I have always loved driving even when we were stealing people's parents cars at like 10-12, well borrowing obviously, but yea. haha the first day at driving school the guys trying to tell me about the gas, break, where to put my hands. I wanted to say it's cool buddy, i've been doing this for 6 years.

Driving really does become automatic as you gain experience. All you have to do is know the traffic rules (what to do at 4-way stops, etc.) and know where your car is at all times. That's it.
What parts in particular are you having trouble with?

During my first road test everything was going well, and I was coming up to a familiar intersection where I had to turn on this weird 3-lane street. I was sure there were two northbound lanes and one southbound, and I turned into the middle lane. Unfortunately it was an oncoming lane and the instructor grabbed the wheel and steered it over to the right lane.

I had 2 neighbors that taught me to drive, one delivered pizza in a college town the other drove a race car. your problem is probably fear, fear tends to make people overly cautious in most situations, this annoys the people with you and around you and in turn makes you even worse. like the saying goes, you have to face your fears to overcome them. this will help you to gain confidence on the road

You're not alone Aprollyfelon lolz. Shit, I didn't get my license until I was 20. I suspect it could have been a lot sooner had I realized earlier that my mom was the better one to teach me, not my dad. But it is what it is.
Once you're driving for a while it really does become second nature though. K-turns are a piece of cake. Just practice parallel parking somewhere with not a lot of traffic. Then you can pass your road test and probably hardly ever have to do that shit again.

Yeah, probably because they don't have much going on upstairs to distract them and they need a way to get to the mall.

Apolly,
Just start driving on little country roads for a while until you get used to it. I first started driving when I was about 16 and was nervous the first week, but it passed very quickly.

I use driving as a way to alleviate stress and anxiety. I have a favorite road, it's a paved back road in the hills that's windy. My car isn't fast so the only fun you can have is around the corners. Usually I play around a bit and think about other stuff. :p

Driving gets way easier after you actually have an instructor, not because they teach you much but just because of the practice potential you wouldn't have anywhere else (as few friends would let you practice on their ride).

The only challenge in driving is learning to drive a stick shift. But even after a few months, that becomes second nature. I've been driving for so long now that it doesn't even remotely freak me out, even when there's cars parked on both sides of a road and there's barely room to get through. Just breathe, relax and don't overthink everything.

Honestly I don't ever remember not being able to drive. I just remember not being old enough to do it legally. My dad used to let us drive all the time when we were out in the middle of nowhere. I remember the only hard part was trying to reach the pedals and still see over the wheel! The driving itself has always been natural to me.
Nowadays I can drive or operate anything out there. From a motorcycle to any automobile to a 100,000 pound big rig to heavy construction equipment. I do it all and I do it well. Nothing makes me nervous anymore. I'm right at home driving/operating any piece of equipment built.

Also, it always amazes my wife when I parallel park. If there is room I wil get it in, and with minimal jockeying most times. She always says the same thing..."How do you do that!?" I always give her the same response..."Don't you remember what I do for a living?"
Here is a picture of a particularly amazing parking job. 40 helped guide me in on this one, he'll confirm the authenticity of the photo. And believe it or not the car was straight as an arrow and right next to the curb when we were done (and yes, both vehicles on either side were there when I pulled in!).

It's easy, it boils down to this.
Get from point A to point B without hitting anything or anyone.
At first it's a very conscious, but after a while, like any skill, you do it subconsciously. That's why it's important to not speed, or be aggressive. Always look ahead for hazards.
That way, when it does become second nature, safe-driving is second nature too. If you want to hot-rod it, that is a conscious decision.
I've seen too many teens drive as if they were in a competition, then lose the ability to chill out and not be a hazard simply because that's how they got used to driving.
Stay safe!!!

I learned how by driving a forklit and truck for a job and racing dune buggies on the weekend. After those, a sedan on paved roads is a cakewalk.
Just drive somewhere with little to no cars for a while and the nerves just go away eventually. However, Miami drivers still freak me the fuck out sometimes. Barely anyone uses turn signals(not even cops) and people drive crazy.

I'm 23 and kinda scared of driving.
I mean I haven't really tried it and I'm sure it's piss-easy, but to be honest I'm down with public transport (only wish it was a bit better in the UK, Switzerland is awesome for public transport I've heard). There's something inherently wrong with the attitude everybody has towards cars- when I'm walking to work I see car after car whizzing past with zombified people alone at the wheel, its like a big fucking miserable robotic conveyor belt spewing filth and noise into my living space. There are two many roads and too many dumbfuck, fat, angry motorists. There are too many people killed on the roads. You can be the safest driver ever but all it takes is one retard in the wrong place at the wrong time. I don't understand fast cars, there's a speed limit! When you roll up in your £50,000 car I don't think "Damn, that's one cool motherfucker right there", I just kinda think you're a bit of a bell-end.
Don't get me wrong, cars are downright necessary for some people but I reckon it has gone far enough, spending more on providing decent, safe efficient public transport would make a nicer world for everybody. Instead of this "my slot on the conveyor belt is shinier and noisier than your slot, look at the size of my penis!" attitude.
When I need to drive I'll learn, till then I'm gonna enjoy not being part of the 'just for the sake of it' mob.
