contam in monotub, will the tub survive?
    #7818090 - 12/31/07 06:46 PM (17 years, 20 days ago)

Alright so I have a contamination in a monotub I just started. It is a 50/50 coffee coir tub. There is a very small amount 1/2" by 1/2" white cottonlike contamination in there. Will the myc beat it out and the tub work fine or should I just scrap it and start over? This is a pic of where the colonization is at right. What do you guys think?

I would give it a few days to see what happens. Your substrate looks too wet and may aid in dactylium or bacillus taking hold. If you still have that growth in 3-5 days, scrap it. Next time you put together a substrate, error on the dry side.

I always recommend hydrating your substrate just to the point that you have to give it a hard squeeze to get a few drops. This is where an additive like vermiculite and gypsum are paramount, as they can hold the majority of water instead of the coir or manure doing the entire work load.

The cotton like wisps are really light right now. I will keep an eye on it too.

You've got to take a look at your inoculation points too. If you have growth forming around substrate where you do not have spawn, you likely have a contaminate forming. But yes, keep an eye on it for a few days and hope for the best.

This is what it looks like now. I am guessing that means the tub is garbage and time to throw it out? Very unfortunate that I screwed up my first tub :frown:

And that stuff in the back is green, you can't tell very well from the pic but it is.

So can green mold actually make the mushrooms dangerous to eat? I just don't really see the point of throwing the tub out unless they do. I mean I'm sure it will take some nutrients and reduce the size of flushes but I have room for the tub so I might as well just fruit it anyways right? Is there error in my logic?

You could wait it out to see if you can score something from the tub. But do take it outdoors for harvesting and trashing. Stay upwind from the opened tub as well.

If it were me, i'd scrap it now before it REALLY got out of hand.
