Anyone know anything about katanas? there is one I want to buy but it says that it is a ceremonial katana... does that mean it is not sharp?

It's what I call a "fake sword". If you were to hit anything with it it would fall apart. Real swords cost $250 a piece and up at least.

I think Wiccan is fairly knowledgable about swords. There's certain types of steel used in them. One type of steel is crap and would fall apart if you hit something with it. Another type of steel is really good and makes a truly functional sword. But, as I said before functional swords cost at least $250 and up.

well most functional swords have a soft spine and hard edge. this will prevent it from shattering. $250 swords maybe sharp but i highly doubt functional. if you want a good functional sword you are looking at $2000+.

The other night I heard a thump so I whipped out my samurai sword and stalked around the pitch black house ready to thrust. It was my cat. I didn't stab him, though.

I disagree, the sword he has is a Paul Chen, it's folded steel meaning it's forged, it could probably use a bit of heat treating but it's plenty strong enough to use, I know because I purchased one for a friend and made use of it

A katana is far too elaborate for what you want to do. Which is stick something pointy and sharp into your opponent.
I'd rather have a claymore. Big lump of iron the blacksmith can forge, instead of some mystic guru who only forged ten of this type of sword because of the rare metorite ore used, and it was sent from Nippon to Nepal, where for two hundred years it has been steeped in hash.
It would smell nice though.
