Cutting Off Stem Bottoms?

Well, I've dried out most of my shrooms and many of the bottoms are all grody and covered in vermiculite because they came from cakes.
Would it be ok to just take a pair of scissors and cut off the bottoms of my shrooms? I would imagine this would be alright, but I'm not entirely sure.
Plus, is eating vermiculite ok?
-Much Thanks

Don't eat the verm - although it probably won't hurt you. Simply use the scissors as you've already stated.

Cutting the stem off won't hurt anything except the weight. As far as eating vermiculite goes, the little bit found at the base of your shrooms won't kill ya'.

I cut off the bottoms of mine because of the same reason, it also helped to dry them faster. If you cut em off don't throw them away use the bottoms for tea and strain out all the verm.

Cool.
What about when the mushrooms are still on the cake, do I still need to go through that delicate gently twisting off procedure or can I just take a pair of scissors and go to town?

Yea twist em off. If you use scissors youll end up leaving the base of the mushrooms on the cake which could rot and ruin your cake.

Seconding everything said before... however, don't toss the bottoms... they're often quite dense and have a worthwhile amount of meat there... save up the ends for either a tea, or a high potency alcohol extraction ;-)

Way too complicated folks. Dry your mushrooms cracker dry and manually rub off any foreign matter still attached. This allows you to retain the entire dried structure of the fruitbody and get rid of what you don't want. I think I spend less than 8 seconds rubbing down each fruit as they come out of the dehydrator.

Eating the verm will not do anything at all do you, it will pass right through you with no ill effects. SWIM just dries his out and rubs the bottoms, all the verm falls off easily. Any tiny little pieces left on there are no harm to you.

I have had no problems removing verm from fresh shrooms, it is easier to do on cracker dry. I dont dry mine since i generaly dont produce enough to store, so just spend a few minutes picking the verm off, last night i didint bother and just munched them down.
E feel fine

I like to cut them off anyway, you get hella more fruits when you dont pull the babies up with the mature fruits. Often times there are several pins at the base of your mature fruit, just cut as close as you can with clean scissors...OR wash your fruits with water and rub stem with fingers to remove unwanted materials.

I imagine you are being sarcastic here Tahoe, but stop it with these sarcasms of yours, you have done a couple or three in the last few days and some nOOb who doesn't know what you are like is going to take you seriously and we will spend months having to correct the rumor.

I suggest just cutting the bases off (after harvesting) and saving them for extractions, teas, experiments, and the like. It's quicker and you really shouldn't be worried about the little bit you're cutting off, as you can use it later.

A few years back, vermiculite had a bad rap because there were worries about certain batches being contaminated with asbestos fibers.
These days, that's not an issue. It won't harm you. Eating large amounts of vermiculite can cause a condition known as "glitter shits."
